Wartburg wins first crown while Buttry reaches dozen

Jun 6, 2005 2:47:08 PM

In the most competitive Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships ever, host Wartburg combined distance specialist Missy Buttry's two individual victories with timely scoring in four other events to win its first team title in the sport.

Buttry won her third straight 5,000-meter run title and then regained the 1,500-meter run crown she won in 2002 and 2003 to end her outdoor career with six championships and her collegiate career with 12 titles -- including an unprecedented three straight cross country championships.

But it was timely contributions by Buttry's teammates -- including a crucial third-place finish in the the 1,600-meter relay -- that gave Wartburg the title in a meet that saw the top four teams finish within two points of each other.

Defending champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh finished in a tie with Calvin for second place -- just one point out of the lead -- despite Robyn Jarocki's victories in the shot put and discus throw. Jarocki fell short in her bid to sweep the weight throws, finishing second behind a record performance from Bates' Kelly Godsey in the hammer throw on the final day of the May 26-28 meet.

The College of New Jersey finished fourth, just two points back, after Tiffany Clark's victory in the 400-meter dash and a sweep of the relays. However, the Lions' victory in the 1,600-meter relay wasn't enough to derail Wartburg.

Buttry found herself a nervous spectator during the meet's final event.

"The coaches told me that if our team got third and we beat Calvin (in that relay), we win," she said. "I was like, 'Are you kidding?' And coach (Steve) Johnson (Wartburg's distance coach) said 'No.' So then I was about ready to have a heart attack during the whole 4x4. And then we did it!

"It just puts the icing on the whole entire career. That's what we wanted to do this year, and doing it as a team makes it that much better."

"A year ago at this time, finishing fourth, I knew we were getting closer (to winning a team championship)," said Wartburg head coach Marcus Newsom. "Then indoors, being national runner-up -- by four points -- we took another step. And then to get home, in Missy's senior year, with everyone else being basically sophomores and freshmen, I knew we could put together a good team -- and we just had to take care of the preliminary rounds."

The Knights advanced finalists in six events, and all ultimately contributed points to the victory. Sophomore Bridget Burns finished fourth in the 400-meter dash, freshman Heidi Porter placed third in the 800-meter run and sophomore Stephanie Arey finished third in the 400-meter hurdles.

Then, Burns finished a second ahead of Calvin's Sue Abbring in the anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay to clinch the crown.

Three competitors claimed two individual victories each at the meet, with New Jersey City's Diana Lawson sweeping the 100- and 200-meter dashes to join Buttry and Jarocki as double titlists.

Jarocki won the discus throw on the first day of competition and the shot put on the second day to set up her bid for the throws sweep -- beating Godsey in both events. But Godsey broke through on the final day in the hammer throw with a toss of 59.55 meters (195 feet, 4 inches), topping defending champion Jarocki's year-old record in the event.

Jarocki, a junior, now has won five individual titles, including two championships earlier this year in indoor competition.

Three other performers joined Buttry and Jarocki in successfully defending titles at this year's championships. Carter Hamill of Amherst again won the 10,000-meter run, Carthage's Sheana Grigsby repeated in the 100-meter hurdles and Christyn Schmuann of Trinity (Texas) claimed a second straight high jump title.
