UC Santa Cruz slugs out team, individual winners in tennis

Jun 6, 2005 2:35:56 PM

UC Santa Cruz swept the Division III Men's Tennis Championships with victories in the team, singles and doubles categories May 18-23, becoming the first host team to accomplish the sweep.

In the team competition, the Banana Slugs denied opponent Middlebury a chance to repeat its championship win with a 4-1 decision.

Sophomore Matt Seeberger was a key participant in each of the Banana Slugs' victories. He won both his singles and doubles matches in the team portion, then defended his 2004 singles title with a resounding 6-2, 6-4 win over Will Boe-Wiegaard of Bates in the individual part of the tournament.

Seeberger didn't drop a set throughout the championship, becoming the fourth player to win two singles titles and only the second to win back-to-back crowns.

He also teamed with Matt Brunner to take the doubles crown. The Banana Slug duo won the title by defeating No. 1 seeded Michael Malvitz and Julian Seelan of Kalamazoo in the final match, winning a tiebreaker in the third set for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4) victory.

In the team championship, the Banana Slugs won the doubles point with victories from Seeberger and Brunner, and Kevin Casey and Kellen Alli-Christie.

In the singles matches, UC Santa Cruz gained a point from Andrew Cohen when his opponent, Middlebury's George Mayer, had to withdraw from the match due to an injury. Cohen had won the first set, 6-3.

Middlebury's sole point came from an Alex Scott defeat of Alli-Christie. Scott's play provided the turning point for Middlebury in last year's championship match against Williams. However, Seeberger's strength at the top singles spot and the 16th straight victory for UC Santa Cruz senior Kevin Casey sealed the victory.

The win for UC Santa Cruz marks the third time in the championships' history that the host institution won the team title. The win was the first for UC Santa Cruz since 1998.
