Oshkosh throws its weight around to win track crown

Mar 28, 2005 4:38:25 PM

Robyn Jarocki swept the weight throw and shot put and Wisconsin-Oshkosh scored all but one of its 36 points in those two events to successfully defend its team title at the Division III Women's Indoor Track Championships March 11-12 at Illinois Wesleyan.

Jarocki, a junior who repeated as weight throw champ, smashed her own meet record and led a 21-point outburst by the Titans in that event, then led her team to another 14 points by claiming her first title in the shot put.

"The first event was the 20-pound weight throw and we needed to nail it to put pressure on the other schools," Wisconsin-Oshkosh coach Deb Vercauteren told the Bloomington (Illinois) Pantagraph. "We got off to a great start because we went 1-3-4."

Jarocki, who topped the record she set last year by nearly seven feet, was supported in the event by Danielle Rankin and Terri Schwamb. Rankin also teamed with Jarocki in the shot put, placing fifth.

The scores in the throws were enough to overcome Wartburg's victories in the 400-meter dash, mile run and distance medley relay as the Titans edged the Knights by four points.

Wartburg's Missy Buttry added to her collection of Division III championships hardware with her victory in the mile, a new event at the championships. She also helped the Knights tie the meet record in the distance medley relay, adding to her three cross country championships and seven previous indoor and outdoor titles.

Wartburg also claimed its first individual title in a non-distance event when sophomore Bridget Burns won the 400-meter dash.

A distance event settled a battle for third place at the championships, as Carter Hamill's 12-second victory for Amherst over Williams' Caroline Cretti in the 5,000-meter run gave the Lady Jeffs a two-point edge over their rivals from the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Elsewhere in the meet, Carthage's Sheana Grigsby repeated as champion in the 55-meter hurdles, turning the meet into a family celebration. Earlier, the Carthage junior's identical twin sister, Kristal, won the long jump for St. Thomas (Minnesota), which finished fifth in the team standings.
