Conferences: Geneva College will become the ninth member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), pending completion of provisional Division III membership. After completion of the provisional requirements, the school -- currently a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics -- will be eligible to compete for conference championships. Geneva currently is completing its exploratory year and is tentatively scheduled to begin its four-year provisional membership no earlier than the 2007-08 academic year, when PAC schools will begin scheduling the new member in all sports. "The switch makes sense on at least two levels," said Geneva President Kenneth A. Smith. "First, moving to the Presidents' Athletic Conference is in Geneva's best interest because it means we will compete against institutions with a similar mission and commitment to athletics. Second, it allows us to bring back the historic rivalries that have always excited Geneva's fans and alumni." Geneva is the third institution accepted this year for PAC membership, joining Thomas More College and Saint Vincent College.

Facilities: Guilford College announced $1.1 million in gifts from the Edward M. Armfield Sr. Foundation and other donors to support renovation of the Armfield Athletic Center, where the school's football and lacrosse teams play. The college will seek additional funds by challenging former student-athletes and college friends to support naming the stadium field for Herbert T. Appenzeller, retired Jefferson-Pilot Professor of Sports Studies at the school and a former Guilford athletics director and coach. The school plans to replace spectator seating, the press box and exterior walls of the stadium, which was built in 1961 and previously upgraded in 1963, 1977 and 1991 with gifts from the Armfield family. The stadium is named in honor teampic of William J. Armfield Jr., who played on the college's first football team in the late 1800s, and in memory of two other members of the Armfield family.

Milestones: Ron Butcher reached the 500-victory mark in men's soccer when Keene State College defeated Western Connecticut State University September 17. The victory made Butcher only the sixth men's collegiate soccer coach to reach the 500-win milestone. He ranks second among active Division III coaches in victories, behind Joe Bean of Wheaton College (Illinois). "When I began coaching 37 years ago, you never think 500 wins," Butcher said. "The kids have kept me going. You don't have a chance to get old. As soon as you get old, it's time to get out of the game. When I can't relate to my players, I'll retire. Until then, I'm still going strong." Keene State, which has competed in Division III since 1997, has earned postseason championship berths in six of the past eight seasons. The school also has competed in the NAIA and NCAA Division II, and his 1977 squad advanced to the NAIA championship game ... John Gagliardi, the all-divisions leader in football coaching victories, collected his 400th victory at St. John's University (Minnesota) when his team defeated Carleton College September 17. The win was Gagliardi's 424th overall and came in his 53rd season at St. John's and 57th season as a coach ... Tammy Swearingen earned her 300th career coaching victory in volleyball when Westminster College (Pennsylvania) opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a victory over Thiel College. She has coached at the school for 13 seasons ... Debbie Kiick collected her 100th coaching victory in volleyball with Millikin University's victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology September 16 in the DePauw University Invitational ... Colleen Cashman of State University College at Oneonta earned her 200th career victory in women's volleyball -- including 156 wins in seven seasons at Oneonta State -- when her team defeated Elmira College September 17 ... Elizabethtown College recorded the 500th victory in the history of its women's volleyball program when it defeated Ursinus College September 23 in its own Blue Jay Classic Tournament. Also, Elizabethtown coach Barry Dohner picked up his 150th coaching victory in women's soccer when the Blue Jays defeated York College (Pennsylvania) September 21, just four days after the soccer program collected its 200th victory by defeating the University of Scranton ... New Jersey City University's men's soccer team collected its 300th victory in program history with a September 21 win over Kean University.

Miscellaneous: Quarterback Chris Edwards completed his first 21 passes in Washington & Jefferson College's September 17 football victory over Allegheny College to set a Division III record for consecutive completions. The previous mark of 17 straight completions was held by William Snyder of Carnegie Mellon University. Edward finished 33-of-39 in the game for 419 yards and four touchdowns, as Washington and Jefferson won, 45-21.
