Make it eight: Steady rounds bring Methodist another win

May 23, 2005 4:47:41 PM

Methodist led from start to finish in posting its eighth straight Division III Women's Golf Championships team title May 10-13 at Southern Pines, North Carolina.

The Monarchs dominated with consistency, shooting rounds of 318, 313, 321 and 320 to post a 12-shot win over Mary Hardin-Baylor. DePauw and Wisconsin-Eau Claire were a distant third, followed by Mount Holyoke in fifth.

The Lady Crusaders of Mary Hardin-Baylor, runner-ups now for four straight years (including last year's two-shot margin), crept to within four strokes of the Monarchs late in the third round but were hurt by double and quadruple bogeys on the last hole while Methodist posted an aggregate 2-under-par.

"We played really well with the exception of that first day," Mary Hardin-Baylor head coach Darla Kirby said, referring to her squad's opening-round 327. "We played with Methodist every day after that but just couldn't close the gap. I am very proud of our girls for the way they played and how they battled each day. It wasn't our goal to finish second, but we are proud of the way we played, and a very good team won the national championship."

Not only did the Monarchs win the team portion of the championships, Methodist's Charlotte Williams won medalist honors as well. Williams, who last year as a freshman clinched Methodist's team title with a birdie putt on the 18th hole in the final round, won by three shots over Holly Glover of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Glover made it close at the end, gaining five shots on Williams over the course of the last two rounds, but the Methodist sophomore's quick start -- including a tournament-low 73 in the second round -- was too much to overcome.

Williams entered the final round with a six-stroke lead over Glover, but the Mary Hardin-Baylor senior trimmed the margin to one stroke through 15 holes. Playing together, the duo came down the par-4 18th fairway with Williams still leading by a stroke. Williams' approach shot to the green landed five feet from the hole, and she made the birdie putt.

Williams joins Carol Brogan (2001) and Stacey Smith (2000) as Methodist medalists. The team title is the Monarchs' ninth overall in the history of the championship. Methodist won three of the four years in which the tournament included teams from both Divisions II and III. Division III began holding its own tournament in 2000, and Methodist has won all six championships since.

Other Methodist finishers included Katie Dick, who placed third, two shots behind Glover. Dick was the first-round leader after a 3-over-par 75. The Monarchs' Holly Knox tied for 31st and Colleen Walsh tied for 36th.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Maggie Loney finished fourth in the individual standings, followed by Amanda Tuskey from Mary Hardin-Baylor.
