Lords extend rule over Division III pool to 26 championships

Mar 28, 2005 4:30:47 PM

Kenyon led the team standings from start to finish in posting an unprecedented 26th consecutive Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships team title March 17-19 at Hope.

The Lords dominated the field with wins in 11 events to outdistance second-place Emory by 152 points. Johns Hopkins finished third, followed by Williams and Denison.

Kenyon senior Elliot Rushton, who was named swimmer of the meet, won three events and set meet records in the two distance freestyles. Ruston also won the 400-yard individual medley.

Rushton's win in the 500-yard freestyle marked the sixth time since 1998 that a member of the Rushton family has won the event. Elliot's older brother Tom won the race four straight years from 1998 through 2001.

Double winners for the Lords were Andrejus Duda in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, and Davis Zarins in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes.

Kenyon also won an 11th consecutive title in the 400-yard freestyle relay, one of four relay wins for the Lords. The only relay Kenyon didn't win was the 200-yard medley, in which the Lords were disqualified for jumping too soon on the fourth leg. The judges deliberated several minutes after the race before disqualifying the Kenyon team. The event victory went to Emory, ending Kenyon's streak of 26 straight relay wins.

The Lords' 200-yard freestyle relay team had to come from behind to edge Gustavus Adolphus by .20 seconds. Kenyon has won the event for five consecutive years and 10 of the last 11.

Besides Kenyon's Rushton, Zarins and Duda, other double winners in the meet were diver Mike Shaw of Springfield on the one- and three-meter boards (he was named diver of the meet) and Chris Pearson of Carnegie Mellon in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly. Pearson also finished second behind Rushton in the 500-yard freestyle.

Emory's second-place finish in the team standings was fueled by Chris Halstead's win in the 200-yard backstroke, a race in which he beat Kenyon's Duda. Halstead also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley, and third in the 100-yard backstroke, and he swam the lead-off leg in Emory's winning 200-yard medley relay.

Freshman Andrew Cox of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.37 seconds.
