Guilford pair lead golf charge, then square off individually

May 23, 2005 4:45:25 PM

Guilford may have run away with the team title at the Division III Men's Golf Championships May 10-13 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, but two Quakers took the battle for medalist honors down to the wire.

Guilford golfers Colin Clark and Dave Patterson were tied after 72 holes, but Clark made quick work of the playoff, parring the first extra hole while Patterson bogeyed.

Both players had missed short par putts on the last hole of regulation play.

Clark is Guilford's first NCAA individual champion in any sport, but he earned that distinction reluctantly. With the team title already secured, neither golfer was excited about a playoff between teammates for individual honors.

But tournament rules required the duel.

"Coach (Jack Jensen) asked me if I wanted to play (a playoff)," Patterson said. "I said, 'No, I don't want to play a playoff. It doesn't matter to me -- win or lose, we're still bringing back the trophy.' "

"We didn't really want to do it -- we had the (team) title already," Clark said. "Then they told us we have to do it. We were like, 'Well, all right, we'll go do it real quick.' It just happened that he made a bogey and I made a par."

Jensen noted that Clark had a string of runner-up finishes in tournaments. "I kept telling him, 'You'd trade this last one for all three of those combined,' " Jensen said. "I don't think he bought it, but it worked out."

Guilford's second team title in four years wasn't nearly as dramatic. The Quakers began play in the final round with a 20-stroke lead and padded the margin by shooting a two-over-par 290, the lowest score in round on the par-72 El Campeon Course. The Quakers' 25-stroke win over second-place Redlands is the largest victory margin since the 1999 tournament.

Greensboro, which won this event in 2000, was six shots behind Redlands. Methodist finished fourth by two strokes, while Nebraska Wesleyan placed fifth.

Besides Clark and Patterson finishing one-two, Guilford's Brant Stovall placed fifth.

Jensen, completing his 29th season, received coach-of-the-year honors from the Collegiate Golf Coaches Association.

Guilford had the low score in two of the tournament's four rounds, including a season-low 285 in round two, which opened a 10-shot gap between the Quakers and the rest of the 23-team field. Guilford doubled its advantage with a 297 in round three.

Patterson shot a three-under 69 in each of the first two rounds, but a third-round 80 dropped him behind LeGrange's Michael Lemmo and Clark into third place. Patterson shot an even-par 72 in the final round while Clark posted a two-over 74.

Stovall shot Guilford's lowest final-round score (71), which vaulted him from 11th to fifth in the individual standings. Lemmo finished third with a 4-over-par 292, one shot ahead of Pete Weber of Loras. Weber's opening-round 68 ended up being the low round of the tournament.

Trent Davis of Nebraska Wesleyan and Ryan Sharpe of Greensboro tied for sixth.
