Eagles swim away from Kenyon for first crown

Mar 28, 2005 4:28:57 PM

Emory surprised the Division III women's swimming and diving field by winning its first team title over three-time defending champion Kenyon, which had won 20 of the 24 titles in meet history.

Kenyon, which placed second behind the Eagles, had its 17-year reign snapped by Denison in 2001 but had rebounded to win team titles in each of the last three years, last year over Emory by 145 points.

This year, though, Emory used 13 top-eight finishes to move past the Ladies. The Eagles won only one non-relay event, but still won the meet by 85 1/ 2 points. They led by 25 1/ 2 points after the first day of the meet and by 78 1/ 2 points after Day 2.

Samantha White was Emory's lone individual winner, capturing the 500-yard freestyle. The Eagles' Leigh Campbell placed third in that event. White and Campbell also placed second and fourth, respectively, in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Campbell is the first individual in Emory history to be a four-time all-American in an individual event.

Holly Hinz and Alexis Smith placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-yard individual medley. The Eagles' Karyn Henderson finished fifth in that event as well.

Emory's other event title came in the 800-yard freestyle relay, with White, Hinz, Dana Inserra and Campbell winning in 7:36.82.

This is fifth team title for Emory in any sport. Others were earned in women's tennis (1996, 2003 and 2004) and men's tennis (2003). Eagles coach Jon Howell was named Division III women's coach of the year after the meet. Howell, who began his Emory tenure in 1997, has led the Eagles steadily upward, from 12th in 1999 to third in 2002 and 2003 and second last year.

Howell was an 11-time individual champion swimmer at Kenyon and had coached the school's men's and women's teams to national championships in 1996 before moving to Emory.

Kenyon, which had won all five relay events last year, won none this year. The Ladies were second in the 800-yard freestyle relay but finished no higher than fifth in the other four. Kenyon also did not win an individual event for the first time since before it began winning team titles in 1984. Sophomore Jessica Connors' second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke was the Ladies' top placing.

Kenyon also had only 15 competitors as opposed to its usual contingent of 18. Emory qualified 18 competitors, Denison 13 and Williams 12.

Denison finished third in the team standings, just 7 1/ 2 points behind the Ladies. The Big Red's Jill Boo won the 100-yard butterfly for the third straight year and finished third in the 200. Boo also was the only swimmer to successfully defend her title at this year's meet. A Denison swimmer has won the 100-yard event in each of the last five years.

Lindsay Payne of Williams was named swimmer of the meet after sweeping the breaststrokes in meet-record times. Her win in the 100-yard event was the third of her career. She also swam on Williams' two first-place medley relay teams.

The diver of the meet was MIT freshman Doria Holbrook, who won the three-meter event and placed third in the one-meter dive.

Other meet records were turned in by Washington and Jefferson freshman Kaitlyn Orstein in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.18) and Marie Marsman of Carleton in the 100-yard freestyle (49.46).

Orstein and Marsman also were multiple event winners, with Orstein sweeping the IMs and Marsman adding the 50-yard freestyle title to the 100. Marsman has won seven titles during her career. Brittany Sasser of Amherst was the meet's other multiple event winner (100- and 200-yard backstrokes).
