Veterans vault Blue Tigers to third straight triumph

Jun 6, 2005 2:26:09 PM

In a year during which youthful challengers sought a changing of the guard, experience triumphed as Lincoln (Missouri) collected its third straight team title at the Division II Women's Track and Field Championships.

Lincoln senior Shandria Brown swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the third consecutive year and also anchored the 400-meter relay team to victory, and junior Kelly Marshall contributed a victory in the 800-meter run as the Blue Tigers more than doubled the score on runner-up Cal State Bakersfield, 108-53. Host Abilene Christian finished third.

Lincoln also showed it should remain a contender in the future even with the departure of Brown and classmates Simmy George, Nikkisha Maynard, Marlene Smith and Elfreida Reid, as underclassmen contributed points in six events -- including sophmore Kerry-Ann Robinson's runner-up finish in the triple jump and sophomore Meleshia Spencer's third-place finish in the 800-meter run.

But Brown and Lincoln's other seniors emphatically proved that experience still counts, as the Blue Tigers rolled to their easiest team victory yet and posted the third-biggest margin of victory in championships history (trailing only Cal Poly's 104 1Ž 2- and 90-point wins, respectively, during the first two years of the championships in 1982 and 1983).

Brown became only the third six-time winner in outdoor competition, joining Abilene Christian's Yolanda Henry and Dannette Young. She capped her career with a victory in the 200-meter dash over Saint Augustine's freshman standout Johnsie Liles.

"It was my last race, and it is a good way to go out," Brown said.

Cal State Bakersfield dominated the weight throws for a best-ever second-place team finish. The Roadrunners' April Burton joined Brown and three other championships entrants as multiple titlists with her victories in the shot put and hammer throw, and teammate Cecilia Barnes contributed a meet record with her toss of 57.75 meters (189 feet, 6 inches) in the discus throw. Burton, who also was a two-time winner at the indoor championships earlier this year, combined with Barnes for 47 of Cal State Bakersfield's 53 points outdoors.

Another multiple titlist, Fort Valley State sophomore Lynnsey Dailey, became only the third triple winner at the championships when she swept the two hurdles events and also won the triple jump. Dailey, who also placed sixth in the 100-meter dash to score all 33 of her team's points, matched performances by Norfolk State's Chandra Sturrup at the 1992 championships and Cal State Los Angeles' Nicole Duncan at the 2002 meet.

A pair of distance runners collected two titles each, as Western State's Alisha Williams successfully defended her title in the 1,500-meter run and also won her second title in four years at 3,000 meters to end her career as a four-time outdoor winner.

Harding senior Janet Kogo swept the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, completing in indoor/outdoor sweep this year at 5,000 meters.

The meet's only other record came in the pole vault, where Cal State Stanislaus' Chaunte Mitchell cleared 13-13Ž 4, a half inch above the five-year-old mark set by Abilene Christian's Meredith Garner.
