It wasn't a typically dominating performance, but Adams State still cruised to a third straight Division II Women's Cross Country Championships team title November 19 -- and established a record for overall victories in the process.

The Grizzlies efficiently placed five runners among the top 20 scorers to overcome a first-place finish by runner-up Grand Valley State's Mandi Zemba and tally Adams State's 11th team championship.

With the victory, the Grizzlies surpassed the 10 straight championships collected by former Division II member Cal Poly beginning in 1982.

Seniors Victoria Martinez and Michelle Icban led the way for Adams State, finishing third and sixth, respectively, on the Prado Park course in Chino, California. Also scoring for the Grizzlies were Veronica Ramirez, Lavenna Mullenbach and Brittany Somers.

Those five plus veteran Emily Mortensen collected all-America honors by finishing in the overall top 30.

The victory capped a second straight undefeated season for Adams State and coach Damon Martin. The Grizzlies also collected three National Association of Intecollegiate Athletics titles before joining the NCAA in 1992 -- the year they ended Cal Poly's record streak.

However, this year's margin of victory was considerably smaller than last year's 70-point shellacking of the field, with Adams State finishing 15 points better than Grand Valley State, which posted its best national performance yet.

The Lakers received a huge boost from Zemba, who became Grand Valley State's first individual cross country champion with an 11-second victory over Western State's Esther Komen.

The senior improved dramatically on a 44th-place finish in 2002 and the 21st-place finish she posted last year after sitting out for a season.

Two other Lakers -- sophomore Karlie Singleton and junior Stacey Kandas --joined Zemba among the top 20 scorers, and Grand Valley State collected a fourth all-America certificate with senior Adrian Chouinard.

However, Adams State's third through fifth scorers provided the final margin of victory, with Ramirez finishing four places ahead of Kandas, Mullenbach finishing two ahead of Chouinard and Somers crossing the line nine ahead of freshman Laura Ademan.

Last year's runner-up in team competition, Western State, finished a distant third, followed by Cal State Chico and Colorado School of Mines.

Members of competing teams dominated the individual standings, taking the top eight spots in the race. Two of those spots were claimed by Abilene Christian's Olha Kryv'yak and Adeh Mwamba, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Arkansas Tech's Aoife Cooke was the top finisher who wasn't affiliated with a competing team, placing ninth. Allison Kruetzer, the individual championship runner-up at last year's meet as a freshman, finished 11th this year.
