Rollins proves its women's golf team to be better than par

May 23, 2005 4:29:52 PM

Rollins rolled to a third straight Division II Women's Golf Championships team title with a record-setting four-round total of 1,185. The 17-over-par aggregate was 35 shots better than second-place Grand Valley State.

Western New Mexico hosted the tournament May 11-14 in Albuquerque.

The Tars, which in addition to their three titles also have three-runner-up finishes in the championships' 10-year history, fired the low round in each of the four days of the tournament. Their 304 final-round score was 14 strokes better than Grand Valley State and 11 clear of Florida Southern, which finished third. Florida Southern is the only other team to have won this event three straight times -- from 2000 through 2002.

Ferris State placed fourth, followed by Western Washington.

Grand Valley State shot school-record totals for rounds two and three but lost ground each day to the streaking Tars.

All five Rollins golfers finished in the top eight in the individual standings. Marianna De Biase, who led after the third round, finished third, while Charlotte Campbell and Ulrika Ljungman tied for fourth, and Marie-Pierre Bernier and Venessa Vela tied for seventh.

"This was absolutely a great team effort, to break our scoring record on a par-73 course is a true testament to the depth of our team," said Rollins coach Julie Garner. "We lost 40 percent of our top five from last year's championship team, but our two new players (Bernier and Vela) stepped up and played great. I've had more fun coaching these players than possibly any other team I've had."

It was two non-Rollins golfers, though, who battled for medalist honors. That contest wasn't decided until Melissa Sneller of Grand Valley State birdied the final hole to post a closing-round 73, one shot better than Florida Southern's Pamela Feggans.

The two golfers were tied going into the 18th hole of the final round. Feggans missed her birdie attempt while Sneller converted hers after hitting her third shot on the par-5 18th hole five feet from the cup.

Sneller shot a Division II-record even par for the tournament, posting a consistent card of 74-72-73-73. Feggans also scored consistently low, with rounds of 74-73-72-74.
