Miscellaneous: The University of Tampa, along with the Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake City soccer teams, conducted the Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Soccer Festival February 13 in honor of the longtime Tampa soccer coach who was killed in a December motorcycle crash. All proceeds from the event benefited the Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship Fund. The day involved a youth clinic, a coaching symposium, matches between U.S. national youth teams and a match between the Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake City. "I know Tom would be unbelievably overwhelmed by all the support," said Debi Fitzgerald, his wife. "It would mean so much to him to have an endowment in his name at the University of Tampa" ... The South Atlantic Conference recently announced an agreement with Time Warner Cable to broadcast the league's men's and women's conference basketball championship games, along with five regular-season football games and a preseason football special in fall 2005. "This is a giant step for the South Atlantic Conference," Commissioner Doug Echols said. "Television is an important medium, and we want to be able to showcase the talents and extraordinary achievements of the fine student-athletes who participate in the South Atlantic Conference." The men's and women's basketball championship games will be carried on Time Warner Cable in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina, as well as on Comcast Sports South. The games, to be aired on a delayed basis, will be available on 5.2 million homes throughout the Southeast. Next fall's football package will feature all eight members at least once and will include the Bronze Derby game between Newberry and Presbyterian Colleges ... The new president of the Women's National Basketball Association has a Division II tie. Donna Orender, whose selection was announced February 11 by NBA Commissioner David Stern, is a 1978 graduate of Queens College (New York), where she played basketball.

Milestones: Doug Jones, baseball coach at Tusculum College, won his 200th career game February 17 when the Pioneers defeated Pfeiffer University, 13-3. Jones, coaching in his eighth year at Tusculum, is the program's most successful coach. After the landmark victory, his overall record was 200-167. "Having a goal of 200 wins has never been on my mind," Jones said. "Our team theme this season -- 'It's Not About Me' -- is how I really feel in reaching this achievement."
