Conferences: Humboldt State University has accepted an invitation to join the California Collegiate Athletic Conference, effective with the 2006-07 academic year. President Rollin C. Richmond and Athletics Director Dan Collen made the announcement September 22 after the CCAA's Presidents/Chancellors Group voted to extend the invitation for membership. "The Presidents/Chancellors Group has been very impressed with Humboldt State's ongoing commitment to academic and athletics excellence," CCAA Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert said. "As a fellow California State University institution, Humboldt State shares many of the values our current membership embodies." Humboldt State will join 10 other California State University institutions as CCAA members. Humboldt State has been a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference since the league's establishment in 2001. Before that, the institution competed in the Pacific West Conference for three years. It sponsors a 12-sport program that includes men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's outdoor track and field, and softball. It also is the only California institution to compete in football. It also sponsors rowing, which is not a CCAA sport.

Milestones: Virginia Union University's women's volleyball program won the 100th game in its short history September 21 with a victory over Shaw University. One night later, head coach Queen Frazier won her 50th game with a three-game victory over Saint Paul's College.

Miscellaneous: Jim Day, a member of the Upper Iowa University board of trustees, and his wife Judy have announced plans to make a bequest of more than $2.5 million to the institution's department of athletics. Day, a 1967 graduate and a four-year letter-winner in football, credits former Upper Iowa football coach Everett "Eb" Eischeid with changing the direction of his life ... The East Central University men's cross country team set a world record for the 100-mile relay for a team of 10 recently, covering the distance in 8 hours and 28 minutes, eclipsing the previous record by more than an hour. The pace was about 5:05 per mile. The team started about 7:30 p.m. and finished at 4 a.m., with each person running 10 miles.
