'Moderation' an appropriate call for sports reform

An excerpt from the remarks of former Grand Valley State University President Arend D. Lubbers during the Division II Chancellors and Presidents Summit:

"Our constraints have revealed our strengths. We come close to the golden mean for intercollegiate athletics. We are forced to compromise and balance in all that we do, and we find that they are good.

"Let me quote from Shakespeare, who never knew the pleasure of sinking a 20-foot putt, scoring a touchdown, hitting a home run or doing a slam dunk. In 'Troilus and Cressida,' Pandarus says to his agitated niece, 'Be moderate. Be moderate.' These are not exactly words one might expect in issuing a clarion call for integrity in athletics, but they are good advice as we balance athletics within our institutions.

"I am never a moderate spectator, but I was a moderate administrator. Wherever the NCAA may go in its continuing desire to serve student-athletes and the colleges and universities they attend, we can be proud of how we in Division II have defined ourselves and acted. Wherever we go, there is much to take with us."
