Metropolitan State sophomore forward Kylee Hanavan scored the deciding goal with 39 seconds left in the Division II Women's Soccer Championship game to lift the Roadrunners to their first title December 4 at Midwestern State.

Hanavan's goal gave Metropolitan State a 3-2 victory over Adelphi in a battle between teams making their first championship-game appearance. The Roadrunners finished their season 25-1.

Metropolitan State led at the half, 1-0, but Adelphi tied the match in the 74th minute on a goal by Josephine Coiro. The Roadrunners regained the lead just three minutes later when Adrianne Almaraz converted a penalty kick, but Coiro knotted the score again on a free kick at 85:59.

Hanavan scored the game-winner for the Roadrunners off a cross after a rebound at 89:21.

"They're the best in the country," Metropolitan State head coach Danny Sanchez said of his players, who won their final 23 games this season. "And you can't take that away."

The Roadrunners outshot the Panthers, 20-10, and forced Adelphi goalkeeper Christine Conway to make eight saves. Hanavan was named the tournament's most outstanding offensive player, while Metropolitan State junior Stephanie Prouty was selected as the tournament's most outstanding defensive player.

Others on the all-tournament team included Ymara Guante and Marina MacDonald of Metropolitan State; Coiro, Dina Cali and Lauren Lopez of Adelphi; Amber Richardson and Anne Willrett of Nebraska-Omaha; and Rebecca Angus and Claire Ramsdale of Carson-Newman.

Sanchez, whose career record at Metropolitan State stands at 65-5-4, guided his squad to a 2-0 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the semifinals. Adelphi won its semifinal match, 2-1, over Carson-Newman.

With a 20-4-1 record, the Panthers completed their most successful season in program history. Coiro, a two-time all-American, finished her career as Adelphi's most prolific scorer. In three NCAA tournament appearances, she has amassed 26 points, including 10 goals. Her overall career total stands at 177 goals and 27 assists (181 points).
