Mavericks nip Augustana in Division II wrestling

Mar 28, 2005 4:15:25 PM

In front of a home crowd of 3,500, Nebraska-Omaha claimed its second consecutive Division II Wrestling Championships team title at Sapp Fieldhouse March 11-12.

Nebraska-Omaha, which had three individual champions, totaled 109 1/ 2 points to hold off Augustana (South Dakota), which scored 109 points. Minnesota State Mankato was third, followed by Pittsburgh-Johnstown and Findlay.

Nebraska-Omaha's Patrick Allibone (157 pounds), J.D. Naig (165 pounds) and Les Sigman (heavyweight) all won individual national titles for the Mavericks. Allibone and Naig are both sophomores. Sigman, a junior, won this third straight individual championship.

Sigman padded the team title for the Mavericks, which was clinched when Augustana's Tom Boldt lost in the 197-pound final.

"I was kind of hoping it would come down to me," Sigman told the Omaha World-Herald. "I love the pressure of the big matches and love competing when there is a lot on the line. It was great to win in front of our fans. They were just amazing."

Sigman went 51-3 this season with his only loses coming to Division I wrestlers. His 18-4 majority decision over Minnesota State Moorhead's Chris Taucher allowed him to set a single-season record for wins at Nebraska-Omaha. In his career, Sigman is 132-7.

"Les works hard every single day," Nebraska-Omaha assistant coach Jason Britz told the World-Herald. "He does all the work and is always looking for the best competition. He's a student of the sport. He is always working to improve and was probably in the best shape of his career."

Sigman hasn't had an offensive point scored against him in any of his three appearances in the national championships.

Allibone survived a 7-6 double-overtime victory against Indianapolis' Mitch Napier in the quarterfinals en route to his 167-pound title.

Allibone won three matches in double overtime in the national tournament.

"I have been in a lot of these tight matches and that experience helps a lot," he told the World-Herald. "(Napier) was a tough kid. I just tried not to get rattled and kept my composure. It was obviously a huge win."

Naig won his final match, 10-5, over North Carolina-Pembroke's Dwayne Coward.

Augustana's Tom Meester, the 184-pound champion, was named the outstanding wrestler at the championships after capturing his second straight individual title.

"After winning it last year, I thought I could take some time off and rest a little," Meester said. "But after a few days, I started thinking about this year. With the team title race being so close, it made it very exciting. It's a feeling I'll never forget."
