Fourth straight track title comes easily for Abilene Christian

Mar 28, 2005 4:21:00 PM

Abilene Christian won five events and scored in five others -- including a 19-point outburst in the triple jump -- to easily win the Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11-12 in Boston.

The Wildcats won the championships' first-ever distance medley relay and also claimed titles in the 400-meter dash, 800- and 5,000-meter runs and long jump to tally 84 points -- 38 better than runner-up Adams State.

The title is Abilene Christian's fourth in a row and 12th in the 21-year history of the event.

Freshman Nicodemus Naimadu, who won the Division II cross country title last November, anchored the distance medley win and also claimed the 5,000 meters title to lead the Wildcats to their fourth straight team trophy.

Teammate Yevgen Pashchenko won the long jump and led the scoring flurry in the triple jump, finishing second while Abilene Christian's Ben Washington placed third and Vladyslav Gorbenko finished fourth.

Marvin Essor's victory in the 400 came after four Saint Augustine's runners posted the top qualifying times in preliminaries. However, the Falcons were forced to scratch one of their qualifiers, Nathaniel McKinney, before the final, and then Saint Augustine's Andre Thompson withdrew during the race with an injury.

Lucky Habede rounded out the title parade for the Wildcats when he became the school's 11th 800-meter victor in the last 13 years.

The team also picked up a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash from Marvin Bien-Aime and scored points in the mile, 1,600-meter relay and pole vault.

Adams State posted its best finish at the championships by collecting three second-place finishes -- including the 1,600-meter and distance medley relays -- and two third-place finishes to edge Lincoln (Missouri) by 21/ 2 points.

Lincoln, however, claimed two individual titles at the meet when Lerone Clark won the 60-meter dash and freshman Decosma Wright won the 60-meter hurdles.

Cal State Bakersfield finished fourth, claiming titles in the shot put and weight throw and scoring all 34 of its points in those events. The Roadrunners' Chris Figures, last year's winner in the shot put, won this year's weight throw with a meet-record toss of 20.55 meters (67 feet, 51/ 2 inches), then finished second in the shot put behind teammate Van Mounts.
