Four seconds good enough for first for Saint Augustine's

Mar 28, 2005 4:22:53 PM

Saint Augustine's won no individual titles but finished second in four events -- including the decisive 1,600-meter relay -- to win the team trophy at the Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11-12 in Boston.

The Lady Falcons set themselves up for a fifth team title with freshman Johnsie Liles' second-place finishes in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and sophomore Marquita Davis' second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.

Saint Augustine's then clinched the victory when its 1,600-meter relay team -- featuring three freshmen and a junior -- crossed the finish line just behind event winner Lincoln (Missouri) and one second ahead of Abilene Christian.

The Lady Falcons, who have won three of the last five championships, bounced back from an uncharacteristically low fifth-place finish at last year's meet.

Abilene Christian's third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay was just barely enough to nail down second place in the team standings, just a half point ahead of Lincoln. The Wildcats' Olga Kriv'yak won the mile, and Abilene Christian also grabbed second-place finishes in the 800-meter run and distance medley relay.

Lincoln, which swept last year's indoor and outdoor track championships, added Moya Thompson's win in the 400-meter dash to its relay victory.

Victoria Martinez boosted Adams State to a fourth-place team finish, running the first leg for the Grizzlies' victory in the championships' first-ever distance medley relay, then winning the 800-meter run.

The Grizzlies edged Nebraska-Omaha in the standings by one points, overcoming the Mavericks' one-two finishes by Anastasia Kyvelidou and Debbie Akerly in the triple jump and by Foluso Makinde and Kyvelidou in the long jump.

Cal State Bakersfield dominated the throwing events, as its entrants in the weight throw finished first, second and fourth. The weight throw winner, April Burton, also claimed the shot put title.

In other results, Harding's Janet Kogo beat the 5,000-meter run record by nearly two seconds, and Minnesota State Mankato pole vaulter Amanda Frame bettered her own year-old record and won her second straight title with a 4-meter effort in that event.
