Abilene Christian dominates long and short of track meet

Jun 6, 2005 2:23:57 PM

Host Abilene Christian claimed five event wins in cruising to a 25-point victory and a fourth straight team title at the Division II Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Wildcats finished a sweep of this year's indoor and outdoor team titles with victories in the sprints and distance events, including a double victory by sophomore Nicodemus Naimadu in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run.

In addition, Marvin Bien-Aime claimed the 200-meter dash crown and Marvin Essor won the 400-meter dash before the Wildcats closed out the meet on a triumphant note with a victory in the 1,600-meter relay.

The win gave Abilene Christian its 15th outdoor championship overall.

"This was a great weekend for our guys," said Wildcats coach Jon Murray after the May 26-28 meet. "They really worked hard to get ready to win this meet, and that hard work paid off. We had really good performances all weekend, and finished it off in style by winning the relay."

Naimadu was one of two double titlists in individual competition, and boosted his total of championships this year to four, following victories at last fall's cross country championships and at 5,000 meters in March's indoor championships.

"I was able to win the steeplechase by a good margin, but this was a very competitive race," Naimadu said after his nine-second victory at 5,000 meters over Adams State's Celedonio Rodriguez, another Division II cross country champion and the defending 5,000 meters titlist.

"I have been working very hard for this competition with the idea that we train hard to win easy," Naimadu said.

Rodriguez still managed to score a total of 18 points for second-place Adams State, following up a victory in the 10,000-meter run with his runner-up finish at 5,000 meters. His teammate, Nick Lara, added a title in the 800-meter run to help the Grizzlies to their best finish at the outdoor championships.

The meet's other double titlist was Northwest Missouri State's Clint Prange, who won the discus throw on the meet's first day for his third title in that event in four years, then posted this year's only record in a shot put competition that saw three entrants surpass the 19-year-old event mark.

Prange topped that mark on his third throw, then saw Cal State Bakersfield's Chris Figures unleash a toss of 20.09 meters (65 feet, 11 inches) in the fifth round-- a little more than two feet farther than Ahmed Shata's record toss for Abilene Christian in 1986.

"People always dream of hitting the last shot or making the last goal; well, this was my time to step up and make the last throw," Prange said, and he did just that with a heave of 20.14 meters (66 feet, 1 inch) on his sixth and final put.

Last year's team runner-up, Saint Augustine's, swept the hurdles and also collected a victory from Fabian Hutchinson in the long jump to finish third. Lincoln (Missouri) placed fourth.

Albany State took fifth with Gregory Bolden's title in the 100-meter dash and Brandon Roulhac's win in the triple jump. The Golden Rams collected a third crown when Bolden anchored his 400-meter relay team to victory.
