Women's Basketball Committee to make RPI data public

Nov 7, 2005 9:34:03 AM

Members of the Division I Women's Basketball Committee reviewed the timeline and format related to the public release of the NCAA Rating Percentage Index at its fall meeting in Boston.

The RPI will be posted on NCAAsports
.com beginning in early January and will be updated weekly.

Committee members re-emphasized that RPI rankings are only part of the criteria in the selection process.

"We felt it would be beneficial to our institutions to allow them to see the actual data we review every week," said committee Chair Joni Comstock, the athletics director at American University. "It will allow our institutions to have an understanding as the season progresses relative to one of the many tools the committee uses when evaluating, selecting, seeding and bracketing the teams for the championship."

The committee also agreed to ask the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet to sponsor legislation that changes the basketball committee's composition criteria.

Under the new criteria, the committee still would consist of 10 members, including one from each of the four Division I women's basketball regions, but six members would be selected at-large by the cabinet.

Previous criteria called for two members from each of the four regions and two at-large selections.

Other criteria would remain unchanged. No more than three committee members will represent any single region. Six members will be representatives from Division I-A institutions and four will be representatives from Division I-AA or I-AAA institutions.

The recommendation makes the women's committee composition criteria identical to the composition criteria for the Division I Men's Basketball Committee.

Playing dates for the 2007 regionals also were established, pending cabinet approval. Regionals in Fresno, California, and Greensboro, North Carolina, will be conducted March 24-26, and the regionals in Dallas and Dayton, Ohio, will take place March
25-27.
