Feb 14, 2005 12:39:44 PM

2003-04 Academic Year Men's Basketball Team

Note:  In this example, the team does offer athletically related financial aid to student-athletes.  For purposes of this example, all students are receiving athletics aid unless otherwise noted.

  • Calculate the Academic Progress Rate (APR) by looking at each team's scholarship student-athletes at the beginning of the next term:

Fall Semester

Total Points Earned/
Total Possible Points

SA 1

SA enrolls full time, earns eligibility and returns for spring semester.

SA is Academically Eligible (1 point) + SA Retained for following semester (1 point)

= 2 points

SA enrolls full time, earns eligibility and returns for fall semester.

SA Academically Eligible (1 point) + SA Retained for following semester (1 point)

TOTALS

29/40 = .725

(raw APR score)

  • This "raw" APR score for the basketball team is multiplied by 1,000.
    • .725 x 1000 = 725 APR for the basketball team
  • The Board of Directors established a cut score of 925 for the Academic Progress Rate.  A cut score of 925 is equivalent to an expected 50 percent graduation rate.  If a team’s score falls below the 925 APR score, the team will be subject to a contemporaneous penalty when a student-athlete withdraws from the institution without earning eligibility.
  • The APR score of 725 for the basketball team is below the cut score of 925, so the basketball team is subject to a contemporaneous penalty for each scholarship student-athlete who withdraws from the institution without earning eligibility (each student-athlete who receives a score of 0/2 points in far right column above, excluding those who exhausted eligibility or returned for the subsequent academic year).
  • The Board of Directors also set a maximum limit on the number of scholarships a team could lose in a given year.  The limit is approximately 10 percent of the maximum financial aid limit in the specific sport (rounded up for “head-count” sports, such as basketball and football).
  • In the example above, the penalty will result in one loss of scholarship for each 0/2 student-athlete who has not exhausted eligibility or who does not return for the next academic year.  However, this scholarship loss is limited to approximately 10 percent of the maximum financial aid limit in the specific sport.  In this case, men’s basketball has a maximum team limit of 13 scholarships, so the maximum scholarship loss for this team will be 2 scholarships, despite the fact that the team has three 0/2 student-athletes.
    • 10% of 13 = 1.3 scholarships
    • 1.3 is round-up to 2 scholarships
