Relay rally leads Longhorns to fourth women's track crown

Jun 20, 2005 12:21:56 PM

Texas challenged a competitive field with two early event victories, then completed a sweep of the relays in the meet's final race to win the team title at the Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Longhorns, who built a narrow advantage during the third day of competition but saw South Carolina and then defending champion UCLA take turns in the lead during the final day, finally clinched the title when Jerrika Chapple nipped South Carolina's Stephanie Smith at the finish of the 1,600-meter relay June 11 at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, California.

The victory is Texas' first since back-to-back wins in 1998 and 1999, when the Longhorns also won indoor titles, and fourth outdoor championship overall.

"This is as sweet, if not sweeter, than the titles we won in 1998 and '99," said coach Bev Kearney, who also capped a personal comeback from a December 2002 auto accident in which she suffered a crippling back injury.

"With the personal things that I had to overcome and the losses we suffered a year ago (including a costly relays disqualification), and coming here with only seven people, knowing there was very little room for error -- we just kept believing it was possible."

All seven Longhorns contributed to the team total of 55 points, led by sophomore Marshevet Hooker, who finished second in the long jump on the second day of competition and anchored the 400-meter relay team to victory on the third day, then won the 100-meter dash to wrap up her personal contribution of 18 points to the effort.

Perhaps the key moment for Texas came in that 400-meter relay victory, when Hooker started the final leg of the race trailing South Carolina's Shalonda Solomon but rallied to win.

"Winning really helped set the tone for the rest of the weekend and the girls running in other finals," Hooker said. "I have confidence in every single leg on my relay and I knew when I got the baton, I had to run hard for my team."

Still, the Longhorns endured anxious moments on the last day of competition.

UCLA, reeling from defending pole vault titlist Chelsea Johnson's inability to qualify for the final in that event, rallied with Monique Henderson's victory in the 400-meter dash to pull into a tie with Texas for the lead. Henderson's time of 50.10 seconds in the event was one of two record performances at the championships.

But Melanie Walker posted a fourth-place finish for the Longhorns in the 400-meter hurdles to put Texas back in front by four points.

Later, South Carolina claimed the lead with Solomon's second-place finish in the 200-meter dash, but couldn't hold on as Texas shot putter Michelle Carter finished second to again put the Longhorns ahead.

UCLA came back once more with another meet record -- Candice Baucham's winning leap of 14.07 meters (46 feet, 2 inches) in the triple jump. The victory handed the Bruins a late three-point lead, but they had no entrant in the final relay, and Texas took full advantage to wrap up the title.

The Bruins and South Carolina finished tied for second, seven points behind the Longhorns. Tennessee, which won the indoor title earlier this year, finished fourth and picked up an individual title with Tianna Madison's victory in the long jump.

Eighteen different schools claimed individual crowns at the 21-event championships, including first-time victors Florida International, whose Sheri-Ann Brooks beat South Carolina's Solomon at 200 meters; Butler, whose Victoria Mitchell won the 3,000-meter steeplechase; Wyoming, with 400-hurdles winner Shauna Smith; Colorado State, with hammer thrower Loree Smith; and Air Force, whose Dana Pounds won the javelin throw.

All of this year's individual titlists are first-time outdoor winners, but five winners of events at this year's indoor meet also were winners in Sacramento.

Arkansas' Aneita Deaton won the 800-meter run and Kimberli Barrett of Miami (Florida) won the shot put to join Tennessee's Madison in indoor-outdoor sweeps of those events this year, while indoor mile winner Anne Shadle of Nebraska won the outdoor 1,500-meter run and indoor 60-meter hurdles champ Virginia Powell of Southern California added a victory in the outdoor 100-meter hurdles.
