Razorbacks turn adversity into 18th men's track crown

Mar 28, 2005 3:56:17 PM

Host Arkansas overcame the loss to injury of its top 60-meter dash qualifier and the disqualification of its top-ranked distance medley relay team -- as well as a world record by a key rival -- to capture its 18th team title at the Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11-12.

The Razorbacks won only one event -- Wallace Spearmon's American-record victory in the 200-meter dash -- but employed their considerable depth to compensate for the loss of sprinter Tyson Gay to a sore hamstring.

Arkansas placed two scorers in each of three events and collected additional points in six other events to outpoint Florida, 56-46, for the victory.

Razorbacks coach John McDonnell admitted he had doubts about his team's prospects after the distance medley relay disqualification. Arkansas trailed in the standings entering Day 2, but began collecting points here and there, including a second-place finish by James Hatch in the 800 meters.

"Coach McDonnell always tells us that if someone falls down someone else needs to step up, and that's what I did," Hatch said.

The Razorbacks finally took the lead in the 400-meter dash with Terry Gatson's runner-up finish behind a world-record performance by Florida's Kerron Clement, then clinched the victory by picking up 11 points in the 3,000-meter run, including Peter Kosgei's second-place finish.

"We came today to win," McDonnell said of his team's Day 2 performance. "It's a credit to my staff and the athletes. We overcame a lot today. It was amazing."

Arkansas' only individual title came on Day 1, when Spearmon's time of 20.10 seconds beat the five-year-old American and meet records of 20.26 held by Shawn Crawford of Clemson and John Capel of Florida.

Florida, spurred by Clement's world record, posted its fourth runner-up finish without a team title at the championships. Clement's 400-meter time of 44.57 seconds beat Michael Johnson's 10-year old mark of 44.63 seconds, in addition to topping the meet mark set last year by Baylor's Jeremy Wariner and reset in this year's preliminary heats by East Carolina's LaShawn Merritt.

"I can't describe how I feel," Clement said. "When I crossed the line, I wanted to cry. That was my first reaction. It was so overwhelming -- breaking Michael Johnson's record. I guess it's mine now."

Clement also anchored Florida's victorious 1,600-meter relay to a meet record.

Wisconsin finished a close third behind the Gators, sparked by the performances of Chris Solinsky, who won at 3,000 meters and finished third at 5,000 meters, and Matt Tegenkamp, who also scored in those events.

Indiana's Aarik Wilson joined Clement as the meet's only double winners, collecting titles in the long jump and triple jump.

Oklahoma's DaBryan Blanton, who defeated Arkansas's Gay in last year's 60-meter event, successfully defended his title. Other repeat winners were Mississippi's Antwon Hicks in the 60-meter hurdles and Michigan's distance medley relay team.
