Sports sponsorship: Towson University is adding women's golf to its varsity athletics program beginning next fall. Brian Yaniger, currently the Tigers men's golf coach, will assume the role of head coach. He will be joined by LPGA hall of famer Carol Mann, who will spend several weeks a year with the squad in the role of assistant coach. "We are excited about the addition of women's golf as a varsity sport," said Towson Athletics Director Wayne Edwards. "Our men's program has been very successful, and we are confident the women's program also will be competitive." The Tigers will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association, becoming its 10th member for women's golf. The CAA has sponsored women's golf for three years. Yaniger has led the Tigers men's golf team to a pair of America East Conference championships and three NCAA Division I regional appearances in the last eight years. Mann, an LPGA Tour professional from 1961 through 1981, won 38 tournaments, including two major titles. "I love teaching motivated people," Mann said, "and having grown up in Towson, it will be a joy to return to my roots to share knowledge gained with my wings. I look forward to enhancing the skills, talents and achievements of the members of the men's team. The opportunity to build the new women's golf team is an exciting challenge that I have not faced but will use all possible resources to meet." Mann is past president of the LPGA and the Women's Sports Foundation.

Miscellaneous: The Colonial Athletic Association donated athletics equipment to the Richmond Police Athletic League (PAL) recently. PAL is a nonprofit organization designed to help at-risk youth, providing structured programs supervised by local police officers serving as role models. CAA Senior Associate Commissioner Robert Goodman presented PAL president Rob Ukrop and Richmond police officer James A. Zamparello with a variety of equipment August 18. Over the past three years, the CAA has donated more than 150 basketballs, two basketball carts and 2,000 men's basketball championship tickets to be shared among PAL participants. The conference office also has provided two dozen volleyballs, including a pair of carts, and 100 T-shirts. When the PAL program recently began a youth lacrosse program, the CAA contributed two dozen lacrosse balls.
