Miscellaneous: Indiana University, Bloomington, acknowledged a $10 million gift to the school's athletics scholarship endowment that will provide scholarships for Indiana student-athletes who participate in nonrevenue sports. The gift from the Glaubinger Foundation, on behalf of Larry and Lucie Glaubinger, is the single-largest gift in the history of the institution. The Glaubinger gift increases the value of Indiana's endowment by more than 30 percent, raising it to a total of $42 million. "We are deeply grateful for Larry and Lucie's vision and generosity," said Indiana President Adam Herbert. "In recognition of the significance of their gift, I am proud to announce that while individual endowed scholarships will continue to bear the name of the donor, Indiana's collective financial aid endowment for student-athletes will henceforth be known as the Indiana University Glaubinger Athletic Endowment Fund." The Glaubingers' scholarship support gift qualifies for matching funds through the "Matching the Promise" fund-raising campaign for the Bloomington campus. Each year, beginning with the 2005-06 academic year, a select group of Indiana varsity athletes participating in men's and women's nonrevenue sports will be designated as Glaubinger Scholar-Athletes. Larry Glaubinger graduated from Indiana with distinction in 1949 and currently is the president of Lawrence Economic Consulting. He is the former chair of Stern & Stern Industries, an industrial textiles manufacturer. Lucie Glaubinger is a member of the Colloquium for Women of Indiana University and the Board of Advisors of the IU Art Museum, where she established the Lucienne Glaubinger Curatorship. Indiana Athletics Director Rick Greenspan said the Glaubinger Athletic Endowment will be the cornerstone of athletics' campaign to raise funds for scholarships and capital needs ... How skilled were Bradley University student-athletes in the classroom this year? Skilled enough for all 17 members of the softball team to qualify for the school's athletics director's academic honor roll. As impressive as that sounds, though, the softball team managed only the third-best grade-point average among Bradley's 14 intercollegiate athletics teams last semester. While softball set a team record with a 3.52 team GPA last spring, raising the squad's cumulative GPA to a record 3.38, the women's cross country team checked in with a team-record 3.70 mark, while the track and field team also recorded a record 3.58 semester GPA. Among the 14 teams, 11 improved their cumulative GPAs and 10 bettered their semester marks last spring. Nine of the 14 achieved at least a 3.0 team GPA and five teams recorded either a semester or cumulative GPA record. Together, Bradley's women student-athletes set semester (3.47) and cumulative (3.32) GPA records, and the entire student-athlete population finished the spring semester with a record 3.19 GPA. By comparison, the entire Bradley student body recorded a 3.14 GPA last spring. "We are extremely proud of the continued, collective outstanding academic performances of our student-athletes," said Bradley Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. "These significant combined results remain a by-product of the diligent efforts of the fine young men and women in our program, as well as the daily contributions by our coaches, academic advising units and Bradley's quality faculty. Regardless of the potential for professional athletics opportunities, graduation remains our ultimate goal, and we derive substantial satisfaction in knowing that our student-athletes are producing so well in the classroom."
