Milestones: Hofstra University women's volleyball coach Fran Kalafer won the 600th match of her career when the Pride defeated Virginia Commonwealth University September 23. Kalafer is just the 12th active NCAA Division I head coach to win 600 career matches. After the match, Kalafer's career mark stood at 600-340 (578-313 at Hofstra). Kalafer, a 1973 graduate of State University College at Cortland, spent three seasons at Stony Brook University before taking over the Hofstra program in 1981.

Miscellaneous: As part of Ohio State University's "September to Remember" project to help raise money for the American Red Cross and its Hurricane Katrina relief effort, Buckeye football fans stepped up to raise almost $125,000 during the four Ohio State home games during the month. The department of athletics sold the Gameday Magazine for $7 at each of the games and donated $2 from each magazine sold to the project. Fans also could make donations directly to the American Red Cross. A total of 56,373 magazines were sold with a donation of $112,736 being made to the American Red Cross. An additional $11,993.49 in cash donations was collected from fans.

Facilities: Mount St. Mary's University will break ground on its new $3.5 million athletics stadium and field during an on-campus ceremony October 20. The 1,000-seat facility will be named the Waldron Family Stadium, in honor of trustee emeritus and 1964 graduate Eugene Waldron, while the all-purpose lacrosse and soccer field will be named Larry Horning Field, in honor of deceased alumnus and 1956 graduate Larry Horning. "This athletics complex will not only enhance the facilities for our student-athletes, but we hope it will be used as a community resource in support of our many camps, clinics and community events," said Mount St. Mary's President Thomas H. Powell. More than $3.2 million already has been raised in support of the stadium. The complex will include an all-weather synthetic field turf, enhanced locker rooms and training facilities, public restrooms and concession stand, parking and lighting. The stadium will become operational in the spring of 2006.
