Dominant Stanford culminates season with 14th team title

Jun 6, 2005 1:35:15 PM

The Stanford women's tennis team earned every point against Texas to win its third championship in four years and second in a row. The Cardinal took their 14th title in the championships' 24-year history at Georgia May 22.

Stanford also provided an all-Cardinal final in the doubles championship, where Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette beat Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey.

Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova won the singles championship.

In the team final, Burdette, a Georgia native, ensured a Cardinal victory with a win over Texas' Kendra Strohm, 6-4, 6-1. After struggling in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Burdette saved her best tennis for the championship match.

The Cardinal finished the season undefeated (27-0) for the ninth time in school history. The shutout was Stanford's 12th of the season. The victories began with a win in doubles, when Liu and Yelsey beat Katie Ruckert and Strohm, 8-1. Whitney Deason and Theresa Logar clinched the doubles point off a Logar ace. Logar also scored the first victory for the Cardinal in singles, followed by Liu and then Burdette.

Stanford's Alice Barnes was named the most outstanding player of the tournament, and the Cardinal swept the doubles spots on the all-tournament team. Barnes, Logar, Deason and Yelsey also were named to the singles all-tournament team.

The match was played in two hours, 20 minutes, the shortest of the 2005 NCAA tournament.

Cardinal coach Lele Forood is now 29-1 in NCAA tournament play. She said every year at Stanford is separate from the year before.

"The teams are different and the situation is different," she said. "I don't play the matches; I just coach so I'd also have to say that it's got a lot to do with having some pretty good teams."

The Longhorns finished 25-6, and with the 11th seed were the highest seed to reach the NCAA final since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1999. Texas coach Jeff Moore said his players were thrilled with their deep run into the tournament.

"I think this run has helped give us something to shoot for over the summer. Now we can go back and say, 'We need to get back to the final and get a different result,' " Moore said. "With each round of this tournament, we reached a new level. Today we simply ran into a Stanford team that was better, at least today."

Burdette and Barnes earned their first individual crown with their victory over their teammates in the doubles championship. They finished the season 33-6, and were unseeded coming into the tournament.

It was only the third time in championship history that the doubles teams from the same school battled each other for the individual title.

Baylor freshman Zemenova won the first national championship for the Bears women's tennis program in defeating Northwestern's Audra Cohen. She is the first unseeded singles champion. All four previous unseeded players to reach the championship game lost in the final. She finished the season 29-5.

"I feel great right now. I am so happy that I was able to win this tournament," Zemenova said. "This was a very tough match for me."
