Dominant performance puts Cowboys in wrestling saddle

Mar 28, 2005 3:58:10 PM

When a program has won 33 national championships, it's hard for a winning effort to set itself apart from all the tradition.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys managed to do that by scoring the most points in school history, 153, en route to capturing the Division I Wrestling Championships March 17-19 at the Savvis Center in St. Louis.

It also was the third consecutive national title for the Cowboys, who had an NCAA-record-tying five individual champions. It was the first time the program has recorded a three-peat since the 1954-56 seasons.

"This team gave the extra effort in every way," said Cowboys coach John Smith, a former Oklahoma State wrestler himself. "In every tough situation, we excelled. I can name a number of situations throughout this tournament that made a difference for us putting the points that we put up, putting five guys in the finals and winning five championships."

Oklahoma State's Zach Esposito (149 pounds), Johnny Hendricks (165 pounds), Chris Pendleton (174 pounds), Jack Rosholt (197 pounds) and Steve Mocco (heavyweight) all captured individual titles. Their effort ties the feat Iowa accomplished twice, most recently in 1997.

The Cowboys' dominance manifested itself in the fact that they outdistanced second-place Michigan by 70 points in the team standings. The rest of the top five were the Oklahoma, Cornell and Minnesota.

Esposito started the parade of Cowboy champions by downing second-seeded Phillip Simpson of Army, 5-2.

Hendricks' final match came against Mark Perry of Iowa. Hendricks, who had beaten Perry twice in close matches earlier this season, won the match, 5-2.

Pendleton also wrestled a familiar foe in his final match -- Missouri's Ben Askren, marking the ninth match between the two Big 12 Conference rivals in the last two seasons. Pendleton improved to 8-1 in those head-to-head matchups with a 10-5 victory and his second consecutive national title.

Rosholt wrestled Northern Iowa's Sean Stender in the 197-pound final. Stender was a surprise finalist after upsetting Lehigh's Jon Trenge in the semifinals. In a tightly contested match, Rosholt broke a 4-4 tie by escaping with 13 seconds left in the match to grab a narrow one-point victory.

Mocco faced Minnesota's Cole Konrad in the heavyweight final. Their two prior matches had both gone to overtime this season with Mocco coming out on the winning side each time.

This one went extra time as well as Mocco recorded a foot sweep for a 3-1 victory.

"We had our very best performance of the season at the Big 12 and the NCAA Championships," Smith said. "As a team and as a unit, there is no question that our best effort came at the end."
