Division I Men's Indoor Track Championships

Dates and site: The championships will be March 11-12 at Arkansas.

Field: A maximum of 270 student-athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers March 7.

2004 team champion: LSU.

Top team contenders: Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin.

Championships notes: Two members of Arkansas' indoor team had posted the best automatic-qualifying marks in their events through February 12 -- sprinters Tyson Gay (60-meter dash) and Wallace Spearmon (200 meters). The Razorbacks' distance medley relay also has the best time in Division I ... The meet's defending mile champion, Sean Jefferson of Indiana, joined teammate and brother John Jefferson in becoming the first American-born twins to run sub-four-minute miles when the pair accomplished the feat together at the Meyo Classic February 5 ... Michigan is led by Nick Willis, who posted the best 3,000 meters time in Division I, and two-time 800-meter champion Nate Brannen, who made headlines at this year's Reebok Boston Indoor Games by running the second-fastest collegiate indoor mile in history.

Division I Women's Indoor Track Championships

Dates and site: The championships will be March 11-12 at Arkansas.

Field: A maximum of 270 student-athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of provisional qualifiers March 7.

2004 team champion: LSU.

Top team contenders: Stanford, LSU, Tennessee, Miami (Florida), Florida.

Championships notes: Stanford's hopes for a first indoor team title likely depend on how well its talented corps of distance runners fare in what look to be very competitive races. Two-time outdoor 10,000-meter champion Alicia Craig is a contender for an individual title after qualifying for the indoor 5,000 meters in her first outing of the season February 12, and teammates Anita Siraki and Julie Allen also could score well. Meanwhile, freshman Erica McLain had the best triple jump in Division I through February 13 ... Defending champion LSU remains a tough foe for Stanford or any other contender, with seniors Hazel Ann Regis contending for top honors at 400 meters and last year's 800-meter runner-up, Neisha Bernard-Thomas, again challenging defending champ Nicole Cook of Tennessee.

Division I Wrestling Championships

Dates and site: The championships will be March 17-19 at the Savvis Center in St. Louis.

Field: A total of 330 competitors will be determined through qualifying tournaments.

Qualifying date: March 5.

2004 team champion: Oklahoma State.

Top team contenders: Oklahoma State, Illinois, Iowa State, Lehigh, Michigan.

Championships notes: Oklahoma State is the two-time defending champion and the Cowboys are favored again because they return past individual champions in Chris Pendleton, Jake Rosholt and Steve Mocco ... Kyle Ott (125), Mark Jayne (133) and Alex Tirapelle (157) lead Illinois' championship hopes ... Iowa State's Nate Gallick is the top-ranked wrestler in the 141-pound class ... Junior Troy Letters of Lehigh is the defending national champion at 165 ... Brothers Ryan and Josh Churella of Michigan are ranked second and third, respectively, at 165 and 141 pounds. Their brother, Mark, was also a letter-winner for the Wolverines.
