Bulldogs tame elements, field for second men's golf crown
Washington's Lepp wins playoff for medalist

Jun 20, 2005 12:24:03 PM

With Georgia's team title all but secured, the drama in the final round of the Division I Men's Golf Championships was staged during the battle for individual honors.

That race wasn't decided until the third hole of a sudden-death playoff between Washington's James Lepp and Michael Putnam of Pepperdine when Lepp holed a two-foot putt to become the first Huskies medalist in Division I golf championships history.

For Lepp, even making the playoff was unlikely, since he began the fourth round of the June 1-4 tournament at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, six strokes off the pace. But a course-record 63, 7-under par, let the Huskies' junior catch Putnam and force additional play. He birdied the 18th hole in regulation for the course record.

In the playoff, Lepp had to get up and down from a greenside bunker to save par on the first hole, and both players parred the second hole as well. On the third, Lepp lagged his 40-foot birdie attempt about two feet from the cup while Putnam pushed his birdie try six feet past and missed the return effort.

The two golfers were familiar with each other, having tied for another tournament title earlier in the season. However, there was no playoff to decide the winner at Oregon's Duck Invitational.

"I haven't had much confidence (this year)," Lepp said, "but this week, especially today, it all came together. What a great way to end the year. Those rounds are very rare."

"It was an unbelievable effort and a great honor for James," said Washington coach Matt Thurmond. "It has to be one of the best rounds in the history of the championship. Playing on a course like this, as long as it played all week, to play the way he did is just amazing. He made some great up-and-downs and converted when he had the chance for a birdie putt."

The Division I championships record for a single round is the 10-under-par 62 turned in by Stanford's Notah Begay in 1994.

Lepp's heroics lifted Washington to a third-place finish in the team standings, the Huskies' highest in program history.

In the team race, Georgia led from wire to wire and survived nasty weather conditions in the third round to secure the school's second men's golf championship. The Bulldogs also won in 1999. Georgia, leading at the midway point, actually extended its lead in the third round when the entire field had to battle wet and cold conditions. The Bulldogs finished the tournament 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Georgia Tech.

Brendon Todd was Georgia's leading individual with a 3-over-par 283, which landed him in a six-way tie for seventh in the race for medalist honors. Kevin Kisner and Chris Kirk were two shots back in a tie for 13th.

"I knew that we had the talent, the confidence and the demeanor to challenge for the championship this year," said Georgia coach Chris Haack. "It's been a good year, but we only had two wins coming in. I knew if they all put it together, it would be special. They just happened to do it this week when it meant the most."

"This is what you set your goals for," said Kisner, a junior and team captain. "This is why we all came to Georgia. We've got too solid of a team not to win tournaments. When we all play well, it's hard for us to lose."

Georgia had first- and second-round leads over Southeastern Conference rival Tennessee by five and nine shots, respectively. Tennessee disappeared from the leaderboard in the third round when Georgia Tech took over the role of challenger to the Bulldogs. The Yellow Jackets, though, actually lost two strokes to their in-state rivals in round four.

Roberto Castro fired a four-round total of 1-under par to lead Georgia Tech, which also finished second in 1993, 2000 (losing a playoff to Oklahoma State) and 2002. Castro placed third individually, followed by Major Manning of Augusta State two shots back.

Last year's medalist, Ryan Moore of UNLV, tied for fifth with Stanford's Robe Grube at 2-over par.
