Auburn leaves field in its wake for third straight swim title

Apr 11, 2005 3:13:08 PM

Auburn won a third consecutive Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships team title March 26 in a meet that featured six record-setting performances. The Tigers compiled 491 points, building a comfortable lead during the first day of the three-day meet at Minnesota and hanging on for the school's fifth title overall.

Stanford finished second with 414 points, while Arizona (388 points) and California (381) were the other contenders. Florida finished fifth with 284 points.

The Tigers won just two events but featured enough top-five finishers to outdistance the field. Auburn champions were Fred Bousquet in the 50-yard freestyle and Matt Bricker in the platform dive.

Auburn senior Bousquet beat 19 seconds twice in the 50-yard freestyle to win the event for the third straight year. He set an NCAA record in the preliminaries with a time of 18.74, then posted an 18.90 in the finals. California's Duje Draganja, who finished second at 19.01, would have set the NCAA record if not for Bousquet. The Auburn sprinter is the first three-peat winner of the 50 free since Southern California's Joe Bottom won three straight titles from 1975 through 1977.

Bricker, who posted the highest point total among divers in the meet, claimed Auburn's third straight platform crown, following Ceasar Garcia's two titles in 2003 and 2004.

"We knew we had a strong team but we also knew that we would have to perform well in the events," Auburn head coach Dave Marsh said of his team's expectations early in the year. "Then as the year played out, California came out strong, Stanford had an amazing meet and Minnesota had a tremendous Big Ten meet. The competition really rose up during the year and we had to be at our absolute best here.

"Our goal was to improve our times, and we improved times at a 70 percent rate. And most of the time that will get you championships."

Competitors got the meet off to a record start when the California quad of Draganja, Rolandas Gimbutis, Jonas Tilly and Milorad Cavic set meet, NCAA and U.S. open records in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the championships' opening event. The Bears foursome posted a time of 1:15.78, the first finish ever under 1:16. Auburn went 1:16 flat to finish second, also better than Stanford's 2002 record mark.

Florida junior Ryan Lochte followed that with his own American record in the 200-yard individual medley. After setting an American best in the event at the Southeastern Conference championships in February, Lochte bettered the championships' record twice at Minnesota -- first improving on the two-year-old mark of 1:42.66 set by Auburn's George Bovell with his 1:41.76 run in the preliminaries, then trimming .05 seconds off that mark to finish almost three seconds faster than second-place Eric Shanteau of Auburn.

Lochte, who was named swimmer of the meet, also won the 200-yard backstroke and finished second in the 100 to Northwestern's Matt Grevers, who became the Wildcats' first individual titlist since 1958.

Draganja also set meet and U.S. Open records in the 100-yard freestyle after being runner-up to Auburn's Bousquet in the 50. Bousquet finished second in the 100.

Draganja said he had record-setting performances in mind coming into the meet. "Yeah, I was aiming for all of the records," he said, "and in all of my swims I did pretty well and I was pretty close, especially in the 50 free where Fred (Bousquet) was amazing, so that one escaped me. I knew (the 100) was my last chance and I went out there and grabbed it by the horns and came out with a victory and a record."

California bookended its relay records, setting another in the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle. The same foursome that rewrote the record book in the 200 posted a 2:47.70 in the 400, breaking the previous mark the Bears set in 2003.

The Bears also won the 200-yard medley relay. Other relay winners were Florida in the 800-yard freestyle (in a meet-record time of 6:16.53) and Stanford in the 400-yard medley relay. The Cardinal foursome of Jayme Cramer, Gary Marshall, Matt McDonald and Ben Wildman-Tobriner came from behind to beat Northwestern. Wildman-Tobriner overtook the field just after beginning the fourth leg of the event.

Marshall drew the Cardinal close to Auburn on the second day of the meet when his win in the 100-yard breaststroke pulled Stanford within 10 points of the Tigers in the standings, 253-243. Auburn did not score in the event, snapping a streak in which it scored team points in 67 straight NCAA championship events dating to 2002.

Michigan junior Peter Vanderkaay successfully defended his 500-yard freestyle title, touching the wall in 4:09.82, the second-fastest time in the history of the event -- behind only teammate Tom Dolan's 4:08.75 in 1995. Arizona's Chad Carvin had posted the next best time of 4:11.59 in 1994. Vanderkaay beat second-place Tyler DeBerry of Arizona by nearly five seconds.

Vanderkaay could not overcome Southern California's Larsen Jensen in the 1,650-yard freestyle, however. Jensen, who won a silver medal in the 1,500-meter event in last year's Olympics, beat the defending champion Vanderkaay by 4.5 seconds.

Simon Burnett swam away from the field in the final 50 yards of the 200-yard freestyle, reclaiming the title he won in 2003. The Arizona junior beat Michigan's Vanderkaay and Andy Grant of Stanford. Burnett finished fourth in last year's event.

Joona Puhakka of Arizona State was named diver of the meet after winning the one- and three-meter boards. He has won four titles in three years, also claiming last year's three-meter event and the one-meter dive in 2003.

Frank Busch of Arizona and Northwestern's Bob Groseth shared coach-of-the-meet honors, while Arizona State's Mark Bradshaw was named diving coach of the meet.
