Marjorie K. Fieber, a former longtime NCAA national office employee, died July 28 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was 85.

The NCAA's first executive director, Walter Byers, hired Fieber as a business manager when the national office was established in Kansas City in 1952. Fieber, along with Wayne Duke, were the first employees Byers attracted to the fledgling national office.

Fieber would remain in her business manager role for 33 years, retiring from full-time service in April 1985. Fieber told The NCAA News upon her retirement that when she was hired in 1952, she did not know much about the NCAA. "I called my father, who was very informed," she said. "He told me that the only way for the NCAA to go was up."

The national office staff grew to 108 employees during Fieber's tenure. She remained as a part-time employee of the Association through 1999, just before the national office moved to its new location in Indianapolis, assisting with business matters. Her 47-year tenure is the longest of any NCAA staff member.
