Denver travels east to maintain Western dominance in skiing

Mar 28, 2005 3:31:23 PM

Despite harsh weather conditions, Denver captured its 18th National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships team title with a strong performance by senior Rene Reisshauer in the men's 20-kilometer freestyle race.

Vermont hosted the championships March 9-12 at the Stowe Mountain Resort Family Lodge.

Denver continued a winning tradition for teams in the West region, which has produced the national champion for the past 11 years. The last East team to prevail in the championship was Vermont in 1994.

The Pioneers finished with a total of 622 1/ 2 points. Host Vermont finished second with 575 points, buoyed by strong performances by Lowell Bailey and Ethan Foster, who finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the men's 20-kilometer freestyle.

Utah placed third with one of its best performances of the season, finishing with 545 points. The Utes used their performance on the final day of competition to slide past Dartmouth, which dropped to fifth after the last races. Last year's champion New Mexico finished fourth with 518 points.

Denver ended the 2005 season with wins at all five invitationals as well the national championship. Kurt Smitz, Denver's director of skiing operations, noted the team's performance was strong all season long.

"Overall, I am thrilled with the way this team performed, not only this week, but throughout the season," he said. "The Alpine conditions weren't ideal, but we fought through it and our team came together at the Nordic races to end a great season."

The performance of 2004 runner-up Utah was bolstered by junior Magnus Carlsson and sophomore Daniel Sonntag's top-five finishes in the 20K freestyle. Utah coach Kevin Sweeney was pleased with his team's performance, too.

"The Utes charged and staged a great comeback to place third overall," Sweeney said. "What a day -- hard snow all day and a very difficult course. Our goal was to hunt down Dartmouth and Vermont and we closed the gap significantly."

Reisshauer won the 20-kilometer freestyle with a time of 55:57.3, edging Erling Christiansen of Colorado by 10.7 seconds. Reisshauer also took the men's 10-kilometer classical title on the second day of competition, leading Denver to take three of the top four places in that race.

Mandy Kaempf from Alaska Anchorage won her second national championship in the women's 15-kilometer freestyle, finishing 36 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, teammate Nicole DeYong. She also won the women's 5-kilometer classical.

The Vermont skiers took a 30-point lead after the first day of competition with a sweep of the men's and women's giant slalom -- by freshman Greg Hardy and junior Jamie Kingsbury, respectively. It was Kingsbury's second individual championship in three years.

Despite Vermont's dominance in the slalom, Denver captured the points lead on day two and never looked back.

Other individual winners were Megan Hughes of Middlebury in the women's slalom and David Chodounsky of Dartmouth in the men's slalom.
