The Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet is asking the membership to act on legislation that would amend the maximum number of contests in basketball and ice hockey, and eliminate the event-certification process and certain annual exemptions.
The cabinet's proposal would increase the maximum number of contests from 28 to 29 in basketball and from 34 to 35 in ice hockey; however, it also would eliminate the certified-events exception in those sports and in all other sports.
Under the proposed legislation, institutions would be permited to participate in those events but would have to count them in contest limits.

The NCAA Sports Wagering Task Force met for the second time July 12 in Indianapolis.
The task force received information from experts that many people begin betting even before they enter college, and that bookies who are eager to take bets from young people and the advent of Internet gambling have made sports wagering more accessible than ever.
The experts suggested it may be necessary to look back to high school or even middle school to examine influences that cause students to engage in such risky behavior.
The task force is charged with examining the NCAA National Study on Collegiate Sports Wagering and Associated Health Risks, and plans to submit a report by the end of the year for discussion at the 2005 NCAA Convention.
