REGIONAL SEMINARS

Registration available for rules-compliance seminars

Registration has opened for the 2004 NCAA Regional Rules-Compliance Seminars.

This year's seminars are May 5-7 in Anaheim, California; May 19-21 in Indianapolis; and June 2-4 in New York.

Online registration is available for the first time this year, which allows registrants to request specific sessions and reserve a hotel room. Registrants automatically receive an e-mail confirmation that includes the seminar agenda. Online registration can be found at www1.ncaa.org/membership/membership_svcs/regional_seminars/index.html.

The Web page includes a brief video regarding the seminars, an agenda grid that can be used to map out sessions of interest, step-by-step registration instructions and the link to the registration form. The page also includes a message board to allow attendees to communicate with each other and perhaps find others who are willing to share rooms or expenses.

SPORTSMANSHIP

NCAA sportsmanship panel extends nomination deadline

The NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct has extended the deadline for conferences to submit nominations for the 2004 NCAA Sportsmanship Awards.

Conferences will have until June 15 to submit nominations to the national office. Leagues are to solicit nominations for male and female sportsmanship award winners from member institutions, then select one winner from each gender to be considered for the national award. Independent schools are to submit their nominations directly to the NCAA national office for consideration.

Nominees are required to have "demonstrated consistently good sportsmanship and ethical behavior in their daily participation in intercollegiate athletics."

TITLE IX SEMINAR

Annual gathering to feature division-specific breakouts

The 2004 NCAA Title IX Seminar will be May 17-18 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. This year's event will feature a new interactive format. Participants will break out by division and will have the opportunity to discuss division-specific Title IX issues, work to create solutions and develop action plans for their campuses. Also new to the seminar will be a Title IX orientation session and an advanced issues session.

Bernard Franklin, NCAA senior vice-president for governance and membership services and former Virginia Union University president, will serve as a keynote speaker during the opening session.

In addition, two diversity workshops will be offered immediately after the seminar from 2 to 6 p.m. May 18. One will focus on gender issues and a second will cover fundamental diversity issues. This is the first time the workshops have been offered in conjunction with the Title IX Seminar. Limited to 40 people per workshop, interested participants must register for the workshops in advance.
