BASKETBALL

Basketball partnership seeks advancement of men's game

A collection of some of the most influential people in men's basketball gathered in New York City December 15 to announce the formation of a partnership to advance the game.

The College Basketball Partnership (CBP) is a panel of coaches, administrators and NCAA senior staff and is designed to address the challenges and opportunities that face the sport.

Led by NCAA President Myles Brand and involving representatives from the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the CBP also includes members of the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee, NCAA media partners and former coaches or administrators.

The group already has had two meetings -- June in New York City, and October in Chicago.

The CBP will make recommendations to strengthen the game, using the NCAA governance structure to make changes where necessary.

The next meeting of the CBP is scheduled for April in St. Louis, site of the Men's Final Four.

TAX REPORTING

NCAA accounting staff notes change in tax reporting form

The national office accounting staff is modifying how it reports taxable items on the federal Form 1099-MISC that is furnished to NCAA committee members

Effective January 1, the staff will code only items such as per diem, fees and honoraria as taxable. Until now, all items submitted by committee members on the statement of expense form have been regarded as taxable, and therefore, all items have been included in the Form 1099 that is furnished to committee members and provided to the Internal Revenue Service.

With the change, the NCAA no longer will code reimbursement for actual expenses as taxable, provided the staff can distinguish those expenses from taxable items like per diem.

The modification is not the result of any change in federal tax law, but simply a change in procedures at the national office designed to simplify tax reporting for committee members.

The Form 1099-MISC was issued in early December to commitee members whose annual taxable income from the NCAA exceeds $600. The amount should be reported on the annual income tax return.

The staff also noted that Form 1099 recipients are responsible to keep track of unreimbursed expenses to reduce potential tax liability.
