Rollins director announces plan to retire

J. Phillip Roach, director of athletics and physical education, has announced he will retire at the end of the 2004-05 academic year. Roach has guided the athletics department for 13 years.

A former member of the NCAA Division II Management Council, Roach formerly spent three years as athletics director at Guilford. He also compiled 213 victories as head men's basketball coach at Marietta to become the school's career wins leader for men's basketball.

In 1999, Roach, who also formerly was a member of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee, earned recognition as one of four Division II regional athletics director of the year and was a finalist for the national award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.


Scalessa takes over Temple track and field

 Temple has named Stepfanie Scalessa as head men's and women's track and field coach. Scalessa, who takes over for George Phillips, becomes the first woman in the school history to lead a men's sport.

For the past two years, Scalessa has served as associate head men's and women's coach at Monmouth. She also spent two years as an assistant men's and women's track coach at Delaware. In addition, Scalessa worked as head indoor track and field coach and assistant outdoor track and field coach at Ursuline (Delaware) Academy for six years.

A 1990 graduate of Villanova with a bachelor of science in psychology, Scalessa was a four-year member of the track and field squad there. She also earned a master of education in counseling psychology at Temple in 1992.

Daniel Webster President Hannah McCarthy announced plans to retire, effective in June 2005 ... John Stevens was named as interim president at New England to succeed Ellen Hurwitz, who resigned. Stevens currently chairs the board of trustees at the school ... MIT selected Susan Hockfield as president, effective in December. Hockfield has been provost at Yale ... Indianapolis President Jerry Israel announced plans to retire, effective in the summer of 2005 ... Nido Qubein was named as president at High Point, effective January 1. Qubein has been chief executive officer at Creative Services Inc. in North Carolina ... Winona State President Darrell Krueger announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2005 ... Parker G. Marden, president at Manchester, announced retirement plans, effective June 30, 2005. The school named Jo Young Switzer, vice-president for academic affairs and dean, as Marden's successor, effective July 1, 2005 ... Missouri-Rolla President Gary Thomas announced plans to retire, effective September 1, 2005.

Directors of athletics

Indiana appointed Rick Greenspan as athletics director. Greenspan, who has been athletics director at Army since 1999, takes over for Terry Clapacs, interim athletics director since 2002 who will return to responsibilities as vice-president for administration ... Terry Holland was hired as athletics director at East Carolina to succeed former Athletics Director Mike Hamrick and Nick Floyd, interim athletics director, who will continue as senior associate athletics director at the school. Holland formerly was head men's basketball coach and athletics director at Virginia ... Columbia named M. Dianne Murphy as director of athletics and recreation, effective November 8. Murphy, who has spent the past six years as athletics director at Denver, takes over for the retired John Reeves and interim athletics director Paul Fernandes ... Chowan named head men's basketball coach Jim Tribbett as athletics director.

Senior woman administrator

Sue Newcomb, assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator at Richard Stockton, announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2005.

Faculty athletics representative

Sandra Strickland was announced as faculty athletics representative at Incarnate Word. Strickland serves as chair of the master's program in the school of nursing.

Associate directors of athletics

Drew Galbraith was chosen as associate athletics director for compliance and administration at Dartmouth ... UMBC elevated Gary Wohlstetter and Kathy Zerrlaut to senior associate athletics directors and promoted Steve Levy to associate athletics director. Wohlstetter, who has been with the school since 1989, was director of physical education, recreational sports, intramurals and club sports. Zerrlaut, a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council who formerly coached lacrosse and volleyball at the school, will continue as senior woman administrator and compliance officer. Levy, who has been with the school for 19 years, will retain responsibilities as director of athletics communications ... Brent Good was promoted to associate athletics director for compliance, game management and marketing at Southwest Baptist.

Assistant directors of athletics

Bob Maxwell was elevated to assistant athletics director for athletics facility operations at Buffalo. Since 1998, Maxwell has worked as director of facilities and event operations at the school ... Becker announced Kelly O'Connell as an assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach. O'Connell, who succeeds Heather LaFleur, formerly was an assistant at Westfield State ... Chris Hughes was promoted to assistant athletics director at Cal State L.A. Hughes has been sports information director since October 2000 ... Weber State promoted Brad Larsen to assistant athletics director for media relations. Larsen has been sports information director since 1979.

Coaches

Baseball ­ UC Riverside's Jack Smitheran resigned as head coach. Smitheran led the program to two NCAA Division II national championships (1977 and 1982) in 31 years. The school announced assistant coach Doug Smith as Smitheran's successor ... Donnie Watson was selected as head coach at Stephen F. Austin. The program is set to begin competition in 2006. Watson was an assistant at Texas Christian from 1993 to 2003 and has spent the past year as an instructor at camps conducted by the National Pitching Association ... Utah hired Bill Kinneberg as head coach. Kinneberg, who takes over for Tim Esmay, formerly guided the Utes in 1996 and most recently has been a minor league pitching coach in the Chicago White Sox organization.

Baseball assistants ­ Rider named Matthew Wolski as an assistant coach ... Joe Rugruth was chosen as pitching coach and Leslie Ramsey was chosen as baseball operations/administrative assistant at Cincinnati ... Mike Sweeney was added as a pitching coach at Massachusetts ... Andrew See was appointed as an assistant coach at Appalachian State ... UC Riverside named Randy Betten as an assistant coach. Betten most recently was an assistant coach at Cal Baptist and formerly was an assistant at Riverside (California) Community College for eight seasons.

Men's basketball ­ Phil Martelli, head coach at St. Joseph's, was awarded with a two-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season. Martelli enters his 10th season as head coach of the Hawks ... Boston College awarded head coach Al Skinner with a contract extension through the 2009-10 season. In seven seasons at the school, he has guided the Eagles to a 122-95 mark.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Duke named Mike Jarvis II as basketball assistant player development/team manager, Debbie Krzyzewski Savarino as external relations director for basketball, David Bradley as recruiting coordinator for men's basketball, and Max Perkins as basketball intern ... Andre LaFleur was appointed as an assistant coach at Connecticut. LaFleur, who takes over for Clyde Vaughn, has been director of basketball operations at the school for the past three years ... Detroit elevated Kevin Mondro to associate coach ... Tony Scallon was named as an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Stout ... Illinois State chose Chris Jans as an assistant coach ... Chris Bowman was announced as an assistant coach at Lehman.

Women's basketball ­ James Smith, head coach at Northwestern State, announced plans to retire. The school promoted assistant coach Jennifer Graf to head coach ... Mike Granelli retired after 32 years as head coach at Saint Peter's. Granelli, who guided the program to seven NCAA Division I tournament appearances and a 607-249 mark, also guided the men's soccer squad from 1972 to 1989 ... Keystone chose Carissa Ryan as head coach ... Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer was awarded a contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Stringer has led the Scarlet Knights to a 175-104 record in nine seasons and has a career mark of 695-239 in 32 seasons as a head coach.

Women's basketball assistants ­ Jennifer Wasson was tabbed as an assistant coach at Pennsylvania ... Cal State L.A. hired Ken Turner as an assistant. Turner has been head girls' basketball coach at San Pedro (California) High School since 2003 ... Usha Gilmore was added as an assistant coach at Longwood. Gilmore formerly played professionally in the WNBA and spent the 2003-04 season as an assistant at Southern Illinois ... Temple chose G.P. Gromacki as an assistant coach ... Curtis Loyd accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Virginia ... Wofford appointed Sarah Jansen as an assistant ... Chelsea Bell was named as a women's basketball administrative assistant at Texas-Pan American. Bell was a May 2004 graduate of South Alabama, where she was a two-time captain of the women's basketball squad.

Men's and women's cross country assistant ­ Rhode Island College hired Colin Aina as an assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach. Aina is a 2004 graduate of Rhode Island, where he was a 13-time Atlantic-10 Conference champion in the long jump, high hurdles and 400-yard relay.

Field hockey assistants ­ Cindy Tindall assumed duties as an assistant coach at Temple ... Trinity (Connecticut) named Katie Perine as an assistant women's field hockey coach and an assistant women's lacrosse coach.

Football assistants ­ Brett Diersen and Ryan Williams were added as assistants at Wisconsin-Stout.

Men's and women's golf ­ Billy Iverson accepted responsibilities as head men's coach at North Dakota State ... Misericordia appointed Tim Foran as head coach ... Paul Johnston was hired as head men's coach at Becker to replace Brian Anger.

Men's and women's gymnastics ­ Wisconsin-Stout appointed Bryan Rottier as head women's coach. Rottier, who has been an assistant with the program for three years, succeeds Jeff Richards ... Byron Knox was named as head women's coach at Bridgeport.

Men's and women's ice hockey ­ Laura Schuler, head women's coach at Massachusetts-Boston for the past three years, was hired as head coach at Northeastern. Schuler was a member of the Canadian National Team for 11 years and was a 1998 Olympic silver medalist.

Men's and women's lacrosse ­ Bloomsburg announced Dawn Strunk as head women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach ... James Drivas was selected as head women's coach at Manhattan ... Bryant chose Wynne Lobel as head women's coach. Lobel, head coach at Plymouth State for four years, takes over for Coni Fichera, who will continue as head field hockey coach and assistant athletics director for student-athlete enrichment at the school ... Heather McClelland was appointed as head women's coach at New Haven. Since 2002, McClelland has served as a women's lacrosse intern and assistant director of intramurals at Wesleyan (Connecticut).

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants ­ Penn State named Joanne Connelly as an assistant women's coach ... Brown tabbed Katie Woods and Meghan Miller as assistant women's coaches ... Cara Gorman accepted responsibilities as an assistant women's coach at Vermont ... Kariane Lauri was chosen as an assistant women's coach at LeMoyne.

Men's soccer assistants ­ Penn State-Behrend named Marc Fiorelli as an assistant coach ... Buffalo selected Daniel Larmondra as an assistant.

Women's soccer ­ Tony Elmore was tabbed as head coach at Mount St. Vincent.

Presbyterian chose Ashley Tomlinson as an assistant coach ... Molly Freeman was added as an assistant coach at Illinois. Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant ­ Pittsburgh named Eric Stefanski as an assistant men's and women's swimming coach.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Larry Zerbe was hired as head men's coach at Wingate ... Paul Mitchell was named as an assistant women's coach at Wisconsin-Stout ... Indianapolis tabbed Marko Saulovic as interim head men's coach. Saulovic replaces Pat Nickell, who resigned.

Men's and women's track and field ­ Coastal Carolina selected Jeff Jacobs as head men's track and field and cross country coach ... Monte Stratton was released as head coach at TCU.

Men's and women's track and field assistants ­ Ty Sevin was announced as an assistant men's coach at Michigan State ... San Diego State chose Michael LoBue as an assistant coach ... Athletic trainers ­ Quinnipiac hired Alex Wong as athletic trainer. Last year, Wong served as athletic trainer at Damonte Ranch (Nevada) High School and formerly was a graduate assistant at Oregon ... Diane Froehlich was tabbed as head athletic trainer at Caldwell. For the past two years, Froehlich has worked as a graduate assistant at Buffalo ... Marymount (Virginia) hired Elizabeth Codjoe as head athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainers ­ Nick Mouyoes was appointed as head football athletic trainer and John Ward was appointed as an assistant athletic trainer at Buffalo ... Wisconsin-Stout selected Linda Dziewior as an assistant athletic trainer ... Cleveland State added Richard Beninghof and Terry Rehm as assistant athletic trainers. For the past eight years, Beninghof has worked on the athletic training staff at Indiana (Pennsylvania) and, for the last two years, Rehm has served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Arkansas State ... Sara Pittelkau was selected as an assistant athletic trainer at Marymount (Virginia) ... UC Riverside tabbed Tosh Tepraseuth as an assistant athletic trainer.

Development ­ Pam McGough was named as coordinator of athletics development at McNeese State. Most recently, McGough has worked as executive director for Junior Achievement in southwest Louisiana.

Facilities ­ Cal State L.A. hired Ed Franks as facilities and event manager. Franks has been an assistant athletics director for operations at UMBC.

Marketing/promotions ­ Megan Coyle was announced as interim marketing manager at Cleveland State.

Marketing/promotions assistants ­ Cleveland State named Marenna Chulick as a marketing and promotions intern and selected Greg Weber as an intern for game management, marketing and promotions.

Operations assistant ­ Jessica Labella was selected as athletics facilities operations assistant at Buffalo.

Recreation ­ UMBC named Geoff Rupert as director of physical education and recreation. Rupert, who will continue as an assistant athletics director at the school, has been assistant director of physical education and recreation since 1995.

Sports information ­ Mike Hirschman was named as sports information director at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Sports information assistants ­ David Barry was chosen as an intern at Cleveland State ... Weber State appointed Paul Grua and Darin Hogge as assistant media relations directors. Grua has been a sports information assistant with the school since January of this year and Hogge, a 2004 graduate of the school, has been a sports information intern for the past five years ... Mark Kimmel resigned as assistant sports information director at St. Rose ... Bemidji State hired Brad Folkestad as an assistant sports information director. For the past year, Folkestad has worked as an assistant sports information director at Minnesota Duluth ... Jack Jumper was hired as an assistant director of athletics communications at St. Joseph's. For the past two years, Jumper has been an assistant sports information director at St. Bonaventure.

Strength and conditioning ­ Bernard Baruch selected Cervando Tejeda as strength and conditioning coach for women's basketball ... Mike Nagler was hired as strength and conditioning coach at UC Irvine. Since January 2000, Nagler has been head strength and conditioning coach at Cal State Fullerton ... Buffalo announced Cheyenne Pietri as director of sports performance. Pietri succeeds Phil Ryan, who takes over as coordinator of fitness center operations at the school ... Shane Levenson was hired as strength and conditioning coach at Cleveland State. Most recently, Levenson has been head athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coordinator at Nova Southeastern.

Strength and conditioning assistant ­ Matt Taylor was named as a sports performance assistant at Buffalo.

Ticket operations assistants ­ Cleveland State appointed Chris Boggs as men's and women's basketball season ticket and group sales intern and appointed Joe Garvey as a ticket operations intern ... Lauren Hartmayer was chosen as corporate and ticket sales associate.

Conferences

The Southeastern Conference promoted Craig Mattox to assistant commissioner and elevated Charlie Hussey to assistant director of championships and marketing. Mattox has been with the league since 1997 and most recently served as director of championships and ticket operations. Hussey, who has been at the SEC since 2000, was assistant director of championship tickets. The conference also added David Knight, most recently an intern with the University of Florida Athletic Association ticket office, as assistant director of championship tickets and tabbed Edgar Gantt as a compliance intern, Jamil Northcutt as an administrative intern and Eric Sanlnocencio as media relations intern.

National office

Deidra Colvin was chosen as associate director of brand management/graphic services at the national office. Colvin was a regional marketing manager for H&R Block.

Reprimands

The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Committee has reprimanded John Mercer, head women's tennis coach at Marshall, for misconduct during the 2004 Division I Women's Tennis Championships. Mercer used profane language at the end of a doubles match against the University of Michigan.


DEATHS

Former Mississippi Valley State basketball student-athlete Alphonso Ford died of leukemia September 3. He was 32. Ford established 10 school scoring records for the Delta Devils, including points per game (29.0), career scoring (3,165), single-game scoring (51) and season scoring (915). He also played professionally in the NBA, the CBA and in Europe.

Fred B. Bently, president emeritus at Mars Hill, died August 26. Bentley was 68.

LeTourneau President Emeritus Richard H. LeTourneau died August 3. LeTourneau was 79.

Ernie Baer, former head men's soccer coach at New Jersey City, died in September. Baer guided the program to a 22-6-1 mark from 1963 to 1965.

Dick Redding, former assistant football coach at Virginia Tech and Maryland, died August 27. Redding was 86.

Former Columbia men's basketball coach Jack Rohan died August 9. He was 72. A 1953 graduate of the school, Rohan was a basketball and baseball student-athlete. He took over the men's basketball program in 1961 and led the Lions to the Ivy Group title in 1968. Rohan resigned as head coach 1974 to become director of the physical education department at the school, but returned to the bench in 1990 to lead the program for five more seasons.

Bethune-Cookman football student-athlete Kovensky Pierre was killed in an automobile accident September 14. Pierre, 18, was a freshman offensive lineman.

Aaron Richardson, a freshman football student-athlete at Bowling Green, died September 15.
