McGee named equestrian coach at SDSU


 

South Dakota State has hired Megan McGee as head equestrian coach. The program is scheduled to begin co mpetition in the fall of 2005.

Since August 2003, McGee has worked as a consultant for the management firms of Ram Tap, Inc., and Montana Equestrian Events. Before that, she spent six years as head equestrian coach at Fresno State. McGee led the Bulldogs to six straight Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) appearances. She formerly was a teaching assistant at Morehead State and Cal Poly. In addition, she instructed the equestrian program at Portland State while also working at the Lake Oswego Hunt Club in Oregon.

McGee, who has officiated equestrian events throughout the nation, is a 1983 graduate of Cal Poly, where she earned a bachelor's degree in animal science.

Chief executive officer

Evelyn Lynch was appointed as president at St. Joseph (Connecticut). Lynch has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at East Stroudsburg.

Conferences

The Northeast Conference named Danielle Vento as an administrative intern ... America East Conference hired Amy Huchthausen as an assistant commissioner to succeed Tracy Shoemake. Huchthausen has been assistant director for compliance and governance at the Atlantic Coast Conference for the past two years ... Lindsey Rogers was appointed as assistant director of media relations at Conference USA.

National office

Michelle Brutlag Hosick and Greg Johnson were hired as assistant directors for The NCAA News. Brutlag Hosick formerly worked at the Evansville Courier & Press, and Johnson has been a sports writer at the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Correction

A story on the Division III Men's and Women's Tennis Committee's summer meeting in the August 2 issue of The NCAA News contained incorrect information about a proposal the women's subcommittee is forwarding to the Division III Championships Committee. The correct version of the proposal is to change the current nine-point scoring system to a seven-point scoring system.

Reprimand

The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee has reprimanded Joey Scrivano, head women's tennis coach at Baylor University, for misconduct during the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. Scrivano made inappropriate comments to the chair umpire of a singles match between a student-athlete from Baylor and a student-athlete from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.


Deaths


Long Island head men's and women's golf coach Lonnie Barton died of cancer August 29. He was 51. Barton guided the men's program to its first Northeast Conference title and its first appearance in the NCAA tournament last year. He twice earned conference coach of the year recognition for his work with the men's squad and also was honored as coach of the year as head women's coach in 2002.

Charles H. Zeanah, former football broadcaster for Alabama in the 1940s and for LSU in the 1950s, died of Parkinson's disease August 29. He was 80.

Former Northwestern State football student-athlete Kurt Rodriguez died August 20. He was 24. Rodriguez, a four-year starter, was a two-time all-Southland Conference linebacker. He finished his career ranked second in school history with 408 tackles and helped the Demons to NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002.

Teri Mathis Zenner, a former softball-student-athlete at Missouri Southern State, died August 17. Zenner, 26, was a pitcher and first baseman for the program from 1996 to 1999.

Former Baylor softball student-athlete Tori Birk Luke died August 13 from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was 27. Luke, a four-year member of the team at shortstop and second base, was a three-time academic all-Big 12 Conference selection. She completed her career with the Bears ranked second in doubles and assists and third in games played and started, home runs and total bases.

Billy Hobbs, a former football student-athlete at Texas A&M, died August 21. He was 57. Hobbs was a two-time all-American linebacker for the Aggies. The 1967 Southwest Conference defensive player of the year went on to play three seasons with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles.

Lincoln Memorial head men's tennis coach Charles Poteat died in July. Poteat joined the school in 1984 and led the program to six appearances in the NCAA men's tennis championships.
