South Dakota State names baseball coach

Reggie Christiansen has been hired as head coach at South Dakota State.

Christiansen takes over for Mark Ekeland, who resigned but will remain on the staff.

For the past two seasons, Christiansen has served as a volunteer assistant coach at Kansas, working with outfielders and hitters and serving as first-base coach. He spent the 2002 season as head coach at Menlo. In addition, Christiansen formerly was head coach at Ferndale (California) High School and guided the Eureka Falcons, an American Legion team.

A 1998 Menlo graduate, Christiansen earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and also was a third baseman for the Oaks.

Chief executive officers

Timothy J. Sullivan resigned as president at William and Mary, effective June 30, 2005 ... Charlotte President James H. Woodward announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the 2004-05 academic year ... Miguel A. Nevarez announced retirement plans as president at Texas-Pan American, effective in September.

Directors of athletics

Mount St. Vincent Athletics Director Chuck Mancuso retired after 23 years. Cathy Ingram, director of alumnae relations and development systems, was tabbed as acting athletics director ... New Jersey City's Mark Griffin resigned as associate director of athletics, compliance and eligibility officer and head track and field coach to become director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation at Rutgers-Newark. Griffin succeeds the late John Adams ... Doug Woolard, director of athletics at Saint Louis, was hired as director of athletics at South Florida. Saint Louis announced Cheryl L. Levick as Woolard's successor. Levick, a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council and former chair of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, has been athletics director at Santa Clara for four years ... D'Youville named Mick B. Fallis as director of athletics to succeed Brian Miller. Fallis, who has been an assistant men's basketball coach at the school since 1999, also will serve as head men's basketball coach ... Jim Dyer was hired as director of athletics at Maine Maritime. For the past 22 years, Dyer has worked at Maine, most recently as assistant director of athletics ... Savannah State named Tony O'Neal as athletics director.

Senior woman administrators

Kim Lessard, head men's and women's swimming coach at Washington (Maryland), accepted additional responsibilities as senior woman administrator ... Midwestern State hired Venera Flores as senior woman administrator and head volleyball coach. Flores has been assistant athletics director, head softball coach and head volleyball coach at Dallas ... Bernard Baruch named Krishna Dass as senior woman administrator, compliance coordinator, head women's volleyball coach and director of fitness. Dass replaces interim head women's volleyball coach Jennifer Manicad, who will continue with the program as an assistant coach ... Noreen Morris was hired as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director for intercollegiate services at Northwestern. Morris, who succeeds Nancy Lyons, has been an associate commissioner at Conference USA.

Associate directors of athletics

Mount St. Vincent elevated Dave Genovese to associate athletics director. Genovese, who also will continue as head men's basketball coach, was an assistant director of athletics ... Jeff Compher was hired as executive associate athletics director at Washington. Compher has been director of athletics at Western Carolina ... Villanova promoted Rob Hagan to associate athletics director ... Mike Cragg was elevated to associate director of athletics at Duke ... Georgia selected Dave Muia as acting associate athletics director for external operations, Craig White as associate athletics director for sports and operations, and Claude Felton as associate athletics director for sports communications ... Rich Franchak was chosen as senior associate athletics director at Xavier.

Assistant directors of athletics

Andy McNamara was chosen as assistant athletics director and Michael Spinner was selected as assistant athletics director for sports information at Mount St. Vincent. McNamara was assistant director of admissions and will retain responsibilities as head baseball coach. Spinner will continue as head women's lacrosse coach at the school, a position he has held since 2002 ... Colin McDonough was elevated to assistant athletics director for media relations at Northern Colorado. McDonough has been with the school since 2000 ... Longwood selected Barbara Dearing as assistant athletics director for business. Dearing spent two years as head softball coach at Presbyterian, and she most recently has been an assistant softball coach at Longwood ... Beth Washburn was named as assistant athletics director for tickets and marketing at Seton Hall to succeed Chris Colleary ... Gordon Finch was chosen as assistant athletics director for compliance at Villanova ... Northern Colorado named Kyle Holman as an assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. Holman has been director of marketing for the Rocky Mountain Stampede, a two-week event that is the world's largest 4th of July rodeo and western celebration ... Tish Brewer was selected as assistant athletics director for academic support and student services. Baseball -- Barry Davis accepted responsibilities as head coach at Rider ... East Carolina awarded a contract extension to head coach Randy Mazey through June 30, 2008 ... North Carolina-Asheville appointed Willie Stewart as interim head coach to replace Matt Myers, who was named as an assistant at Auburn. Stewart has been an assistant at North Carolina-Asheville for three years ... Robert Curran Jr. was promoted to head coach at Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Curran, an assistant with the program for 16 years, succeeds the retired Bruce Wheeler ... Wright State chose Rob Cooper as head coach ... Rob Sheppard was named as head coach at Seton Hall. Royer formerly was head coach at Allen Academy in Texas ... Casey Dunn was appointed as an assistant coach at Auburn ... Michael Beeman resigned as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgetown to become head coach at Loyola University in Louisiana ... Garrett Quinn was appointed as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Stetson. For the past year, Quinn has been pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Young Harris College ... Men's basketball -- Jimmy Collins, head coach at Illinois-Chicago, was awarded a three-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season. Collins has guided the Flames to a 131-109 record in eight years as head coach ... Louisiana-Lafayette released Glynn Cyprien as head coach ... Dan Peters stepped down as interim head coach at Cincinnati to become an assistant coach at Ohio State. Cincinnati chose Oscar Robertson, Hall of Famer and the school's all-time leader in points and rebounds, as interim head coach.

Men's basketball assistants -- Bernard Baruch appointed John Alesi as an assistant coach. During the 2003-04 season, Alesi served as a graduate assistant at Hofstra ... C.J. Hibbs formerly was an assistant wrestling coach at Michigan State, and he also has been head wrestling coach and cross country coach at Wooster (Ohio) High School ... John Evans was promoted to head men's and women's cross country coach and co-head track and field coach at Brandeis. Evans, an assistant cross country and track coach for two years, served as acting head coach in 2003-04 ... Maribel Sanchez Souther was named as head women's coach at Dartmouth ... Football assistants -- Worcester Polytechnic added Jonathan Woods as outside linebackers coach, Jared Powers as running backs coach, Steve Meyer and Tim Sample as offensive line coaches and Michael Bernard as defensive line coach ... Bloomsburg added Tom Pajic as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and receivers coach, Chet Henicle as defensive secondary coach and Ed T. Rush as part-time special teams and kicking coach ... Bob Kubiak was chosen as running backs coach and Eric Soulier was appointed as defensive line coach at Kalamazoo ... Bill Lacey was appointed as an assistant coach at Villanova ... James Madison selected J.C. Price as an assistant coach ... Western Illinois awarded defensive coordinator duties to Vince Okruch. John McMath was named as head coach at Mississippi College ... Indianapolis chose Ken Piepenbrink as head women's coach to succeed Kelli Tungate ... Jodee Schaben was tabbed as head women's coach at Central (Iowa). Schaben takes over for Greg Hoekstra, who resigned after five seasons in charge of the program ... Indiana tabbed Clint Wallman as head women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Dave Hakstol was promoted to head men's coach at North Dakota to replace Dean Blais. Hakstol has worked as an assistant with the program for four years.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Connecticut named Brooke Whitney as an assistant women's coach ... Brad Berry was tabbed as associate head men's coach at North Dakota.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- St. Francis (Pennsylvania) selected Wylie Crisanti as head women's coach ... Siena named Brian Brecht as head men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Washington (Maryland) added Stephen Berger as an assistant. Berger, a three-time all-American in lacrosse, is a 2004 graduate of the school ... Farmingdale State selected Mike Cardello as an assistant men's coach. The 2004 Hartwick graduate was a four-year member of the school's lacrosse team ... Jeff Roberts was named as an assistant men's coach at Vermont. Roberts has been co-offensive coordinator at Dartmouth ... T.W. Johnson was hired as top assistant men's coach at Hobart. Johnson, who takes over for Brian Rodgers, has been head coach at Limestone for the past three seasons.

Men's and women's rowing -- Joan O'Hara was hired as head women's coach at San Diego. For the past four years, O'Hara has worked as head coach at Wellesley ... Hamilton named Eric Summers as head men's and women's coach. Summers has guided the men's program at Colgate for the past two seasons.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- Justin Smith was appointed as an assistant men's coach and Leona Dalton and Amy Levak were chosen as assistant women's coaches at Washington (Maryland). Smith, Dalton and Levak are 2004 graduates of the school.

Men's soccer assistants -- Seton Hall hired Gerson Echeverry as an assistant coach. Echeverry worked as a volunteer assistant with the program in 2003 ... Daniel Ridenhour was appointed as an assistant coach at Winthrop ... Mount St. Mary's named Kevin McMullen as an assistant coach to replace Tom Gosselin, who resigned to become head women's soccer coach at McDaniel.

For the past four years, Ferguson has worked as head coach at Kenyon ... Quincy appointed Kimberly Schuette as head coach. Since 2001, Schuette has been an assistant coach at San Jose State ... Synchronized swimming -- Stacy Leiker was named as head coach at Canisius. Leiker is a 2004 graduate of Alabama-Birmingham, where she was a four-year letter-winner on the synchronized swimming team.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Washington (Maryland) hired Jeb Beaver as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis tabbed J.R. Billman as head men's coach ... William May was hired as director of men's and women's tennis at Oneonta State. For the past three years, May has worked as head men's coach at Indiana Wesleyan ... Ken Graham, head men's coach at Fairleigh Dickinson, resigned after five years at the helm ... John Severance was appointed as head women's coach at Houston ... Palm Beach Atlantic's Chris Bizol resigned as head men's and women's coach ... Chris Young was hired as head women's coach at Wichita State. Young has been head men's and women's coach at Oklahoma Christian University since 2003 ... Henry, who guided LSU's men's and women's track and field programs to 27 national championships in 17 seasons, succeeds the retired Ted Nelson ... Joe Tousignaut was hired as head men's and women's track and field coach and assistant football coach at Olivet. Tousignaut formerly was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and assistant track and field coach at Saint Joseph's (Indiana) ... Chris Bayless was named as head track and field and cross country coach at Ursinus ... Cortland State chose Shawn Wilbourn as director of running and head men's and women's track and field coach. Wilbourn has worked as an assistant track and field coach at the school for the past two seasons ... LSU chose Dennis Shaver as head coach ... Hillsdale awarded additional duties to Bill Lundberg as head women's track and field coach. Lundberg will continue as head men's track and field coach at the school.

Academic services assistant -- Jason Kelly was appointed as assistant director of academic services at Ohio.

Athletic trainers -- Palm Beach Atlantic selected Ben Cowin as athletic trainer ... North Carolina-Wilmington named Wes Brown as director of athletic training services ... Longwood elevated Chris Duncan to head athletic trainer. Duncan, an assistant athletic trainer at the school for the past two years, succeeds Amy Stephenson, who will continue as an assistant athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Matt Rowlett resigned as an assistant trainer at Westminster (Missouri) ... Georgia State appointed Doug Halverson as an assistant athletic trainer. Brandon Parro was hired as associate sports information director. Parro has fulfilled the position on an interim basis since last September ... Derek Neal was hired as an assistant sports information director at Illinois. Neal has worked as an intern in the school's athletics public relations office for the past two years ... Robert Morris selected Ken Baker as an assistant sports information director ... Drew Lacy was named as assistant sports information at Angelo State. Lacy has been an athletics intern at Houston for the past year ... Andy Seeley and Scott Pettett were hired as assistant sports information directors at Utah. Seeley has been director of athletics media relations at Northwest Missouri State since 1997 and Pettett has worked as an assistant sports information director at Central Michigan since 2001.

Strength and conditioning -- Nick Juday accepted duties as strength and conditioning coordinator and assistant track and field coach at Olivet. Since 1998, Juday has worked as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Western Michigan.

Ticket operations -- Cleveland State named Mike Dolsak as coordinator of ticket sales, merchandising and promotions. Dolsak served as interim ticket manager at the school last year.

Ticket operations assistants -- Joe Garvey was appointed as a graduate assistant for ticket sales, merchandising and promotions at Cleveland State. Garvey has been an intern with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics ... Andrew Zywicki was chosen as an assistant ticket manager for customer service at Illinois. For the past two years, Zywicki has served as a ticket office representative at Southern Mississippi.

Conferences

The Capital Athletic Conference named Mike Sanders as publicity director. Sanders also is sports information director at Goucher ... Chris Woolard was appointed as director of championships at Conference USA ... The Horizon League named Will Roleson as assistant commissioner for communications. Roleson has been sports information director at Kent State for five years and replaces Todd Starowitz.

Reprimands

The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded two student-athletes from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania -- Kamar Samuels and Jorge Chapoy -- for unsportsmanlike behavior during the second-round game of the 2003 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship. The committee also has banned the East Stroudsburg men's soccer team and head coach Jerry Sheska from participation in the 2004 championship. Samuels struck an opposing player with the ball while the ball was out of play pending a throw-in. Samuels was shown a red card and ejected for violent conduct, but as he left the field he made physical contact with an official. Chapoy verbally dissented the official's ejection of Samuels, drawing a red card and an ejection from the official. Chapoy also made physical contact with an official before he left the field. The official suspended the match and play did not resume.

School name changes

Concord College has officially changed its name to Concord University, effective immediately ... Bethel College (Minnesota) has officially changed its name to Bethel University, effective immediately ... The University of South Carolina, Spartanburg, changed its name to the University of South Carolina Upstate, effective immediately.

Corrections

The last name of North Dakota State's interim men's sports information director, Jeff Schwartz, was misspelled in the July 5 issue of The NCAA Record. Schwartz serves as women's sports information director at the school.

Notables

Jered Weaver, pitcher for Long Beach State, was chosen as the 2004 recipient of the Golden Spikes Award presented to the nation's top amateur baseball player. Weaver, who also was named as the recipient of the inaugural Roger Clemens Award as the top pitcher in college baseball, closed the season with a 15-1 record, a 1.62 ERA and 213 strikeouts.

DEATHS

Former Big Eight Conference Commissioner Carl James died July 3. He was 75. James played football and track at Duke from 1949 to 1951 and went on to become director of athletics at the school. He also was athletics director at Maryland. James served as commissioner of the Big Eight from 1980 until his retirement in 1996.

Midwestern State football student-athlete Michael Erokwu died July 11. He was 22.

Thomas L. Rider, former assistant athletics director at UMBC, died June 27. Rider, 63, also coached baseball, fencing, golf and soccer at the school.

Former Texas sports information director Jones Ramsey died July 19. He was 83. Ramsey served as SID at Texas A&M for nine years before moving to Texas in 1960, where he remained until his retirement in 1982. A past president of CoSIDA, Ramsey promoted John David Crow of Texas A&M and Earl Campbell of Texas during their Heisman campaigns in 1957 and 1977, respectively.

Pittsburgh-Bradford men's soccer student-athlete Matt Zapel died July 16. He was 23.
