Xavier promotes Rogers to athletics director

Xavier elevated Dawn Rogers to director of athletics.

Rogers, who succeeds Mike Bobinski, becomes the first female to hold the position at the school.

For the past six years, Rogers has been senior associate athletics director and currently is a member of the NCAA Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and the Division I Committee on Athletics Certification.

Rogers formerly spent nine years as an assistant athletics director at Akron. She also completed stints at Temple as director of promotions and at Cincinnati, where she was corporate and group sales coordinator.

Rogers earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and business at Ithaca in 1986, where she was a letter-winner in volleyball and track. She earned a master's degree in sports management in 1987 at Massachusetts.

Chief executive officers

Bernard Baruch named Kathleen M. Waldron as president, effective August 2, to succeed Ned Regan, who stepped down but will continue as a professor at the school. Waldron has been dean of the school of business, public administration and information sciences at Long Island since 1998 ... John B. Clark was named as interim president at Brockport State. Clark formerly was interim president at Plattsburgh State ... Alaska Anchorage announced Elaine P. Maimon as chancellor, effective in August. Maimon has been provost and system vice-president at the Arizona State University West campus ... Western Connecticut State named James W. Schmotter as president, effective August 1. Most recently, Schmotter has been dean of the college of business at Western Michigan ... Tulsa selected Steadman Upham as president, effective not later than October. Upham has been president of Claremont Graduate University. Tulsa chose Roger Blais, provost and vice-president for academic affairs at the school, as interim president ... Manny Aragon was appointed as president at New Mexico Highlands. Aragon has been a state senator for New Mexico ... Daniel J. Carey was appointed as president at Edgewood to succeed the retiring James A. Ebben, effective in August. Carey has been president at Benedictine College ... Mark W. Huddleston was named as president at Ohio Wesleyan, effective in August. Huddleston has been dean of the college of arts and sciences at Delaware ... Ohio chose Roderick J. McDavis as president. McDavis has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Virginia Commonwealth ... Michigan State announced Lou Anna K. Simon as president, effective January 1. Simon has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at the school ... Gabriel J. Zeis, campus minister and coordinator of ministries at College of New Jersey, was appointed as president at St. Francis (Pennsylvania).

Directors of athletics

Colgate named David Roach as director of athletics ... Howard Gauthier was chosen as director of athletics at Southwest Minnesota State ... Maryville (Missouri) hired Linda Anderson as director of athletics. Anderson was associate athletics director at St. Mary's (Minnesota) ... Saginaw Valley State appointed Joe Vogl as director of athletics. Vogl has been fulfilling the position on an interim basis ... Delaware State announced Ed Davis as interim athletics director. Davis, who replaces Hallie Gregory, will continue as head women's basketball coach at the school ... Jay Moran was tabbed as director of athletics at Bridgeport to succeed Joe DiPuma. Moran has worked as athletics director at Albertus Magnus for the past two years ... Tim Downes assumed responsibilities as director of athletics and recreation at Franklin & Marshall, effective August 1. Downes was director of athletics at Caltech ... Georgetown Athletics Director Joe Lang retired. Lang, who was named as athletics director in 1995, joined the school as an assistant track coach in 1972. Georgetown chose Adam Brick, senior associate athletics director, as Lang's interim successor ... J. Scott Kilgallon accepted responsibilities as athletics director at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Kilgallon, who replaces interim athletics director Tim Petermann, has been athletics director and head men's and women's cross country and track coach at Southern Vermont for the past seven years. Petermann will resume duties as assistant to the athletics director and sports information director ... Kutztown's Clark Yeager stepped down as athletics director to become assistant to the provost at the school. Yeager has been athletics director since 1992. The school announced Jack Entriken, athletic trainer at Kutztown, as interim director of athletics ... Jeff Hale was selected as interim director of athletics at Southeastern Oklahoma State to replace Don Parham, who stepped down to assume a fund-raising position with the school's office of university advancement. Hale is assistant vice-president for academic affairs at the school ... Roy Patton was named as director of athletics at Plattsburgh State. Patton, who formerly was head men's soccer coach at Vermont from 1996 to 2003, has been director of coaching, marketing and development for the Nordic Spirit soccer club in Vermont.

Senior woman administrators

Nicole Peloquin was awarded additional responsibilities as senior woman administrator at Maryville (Missouri). Peloquin will continue as sports information director at the school ... Central State (Ohio) awarded additional responsibilities to Patricia Tramble as senior woman administrator. Tramble will continue as head women's basketball coach at the school.

Associate directors of athletics

Colorado College hired Greg Capell as associate director of athletics, effective August 10. Capell has been director of athletics at Loras since 1999 ... Northwestern elevated Chris Boyer to associate athletics director for external affairs. Boyer, the assistant athletics director for marketing and sponsor services at the school for the past three years, replaces Brad Hurlbut, who was promoted to associate athletics director for intercollegiate administration ... Marie Porter resigned as associate athletics director at Montana, effective August 15.

Assistant directors of athletics

Bill Fell assumed responsibilities as assistant director of athletics for physical fitness and club sports at Merchant Marine ... Assumption named Lauren Haynie as assistant athletics director for sports medicine. Haynie has been head athletic trainer at Lane since 2002 ... Scott Harley was elevated to assistant athletics director at Maryville (Missouri). Harley has been head athletic trainer at the school ... Oberlin named Joe Karlgaard as assistant athletics director for external affairs and media relations ... Morehead State selected David Lichtenstein as assistant athletics director. Lichtenstein has worked as director of marketing and promotions for athletics at Northern Illinois for the past year ... Western State named Scott Groom as assistant athletics director for internal operations and compliance, Bobby Heiken as assistant athletics director for media and external relations and Sandee Mott as an assistant athletics director. Groom, who has been with the school for 17 years, will continue as compliance officer but will relinquish assistant coaching duties for the track and field program. Heiken joined Western State in 2002 as the sports information director. Mott will continue as head women's basketball coach and senior woman administrator.

Baseball -- Saint Peter's selected Derek England as head coach ... Jamie Pinzino was appointed as head coach at Assumption. For the past two years, Pinzino has worked as an assistant at Tufts ... Auburn hired Tom Slater as head coach to replace Steve Renfroe. Slater formerly was head coach at VMI and spent last season as an assistant at Florida ... John Savage was named as head coach at UCLA. Savage, who replaces the retired Gary Adams, has been head coach at UC Irvine for four seasons ... Norwich chose Shawn McIntyre as head baseball coach and football offensive coordinator to replace Bill Barrale. McIntyre has spent the past year as an assistant football coach and assistant baseball coach at Milford (Massachusetts) High School.

Baseball assistants -- Augustana (Illinois) chose Tim McChesney as an assistant coach ... Greg Frady was tabbed as assistant head coach at Georgia State. Frady most recently has been coaching the German National Team in the European Championships this summer ... Campbell hired Sean Fleming as pitching coach. For the past four seasons, Fleming, who takes over for Jeff Bock, has been pitching coach at Louisburg College.

Men's basketball -- Mike Miller was promoted to head coach at Alvernia. Miller, an assistant with the program for 10 years, succeeds the retired Jack McCloskey ... Greensboro hired Rusty LaRue as head coach. LaRue, who has played professionally in the NBA and the National Basketball Developmental League, replaces Lynn Ramage ... Olivet chose Kurt Soderberg as head coach. Soderberg has worked as head men's basketball coach at Northland for the past two years ... South Carolina awarded head coach Dave Odom with a two-year contract extension. Odom, the 2003-04 Southeastern Conference coach of the year, has guided the Gamecocks for three years ... Ohio State tabbed Thad Matta as head coach to replace Jim O'Brien. Most recently, Matta has led the program at Xavier. Sean Miller, top assistant at Xavier since 2001, was promoted to head coach to replace Matta.

Men's basketball assistants -- Butler named LaVall Jordan as an assistant coach ... Jeff Meyer was appointed as an assistant coach at Missouri ... New Orleans selected A.J. Meredith as an assistant coach to replace Nikita Johnson ... David Anwar was chosen as director of men's basketball operations at UTEP ... Marquette added Jason Rabedeaux as an assistant coach ... Field hockey -- Manhattanville elevated assistant coach Kate Chapman to head coach to replace Heather-lyn Mennis ... Notre Dame (Maryland) named Allison Fordyce as head coach. Fordyce has been coordinator for athletics and wellness at Harford Community College since 1999.

Football assistants -- Chris Ostrowsky was tabbed as offensive coordinator at Widener ... Minnesota State Mankato named Dan McLaughlin as defensive coordinator ... John Pate was promoted to associate head coach at Georgia Southern ...Tusculum's Jamie Reed resigned after four seasons as running backs coach to become offensive coordinator at Morehouse ... Washington and Lee chose Bert O'Neal as offensive coordinator ... Bill Barrale was named as quarterbacks coach and Dan DiCenzo was named as defensive backs coach at Williams ... Bridgewater State hired John Gendron as linebackers coach. Gendron has been an assistant coach at East Providence (Massachusetts) High School for two seasons ... Chris Davidson accepted additional responsibilities as head men's coach at St. Michael's. Davidson will continue as an assistant men's ice hockey coach ... Louisiana Tech named Jean Hall as head coach.

Men's and women's golf assistants -- Jeff Parks was tabbed as an assistant coach and Brad Pullin was appointed as a volunteer assistant coach at Louisiana Tech.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Harvard tabbed Ted Donato as head men's coach to succeed Mark Mazzoleni. Donato has played professionally in the NHL.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- C.J. Ireland was hired as an assistant women's coach at Manhattanville.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Kathy Frick was appointed as head women's coach at Lafayette ... Cecil Pilson was selected as head women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach at Mercyhurst ... Assumption awarded head men's coaching duties to Mark Kelley. Kelley most recently has been an assistant lacrosse coach at St. John's (Massachusetts) High School and formerly was head men's coach at Nichols from 2000 to 2002 ... Sanchez was an assistant women's soccer coach at the school from 1998 to 2002 and was an assistant men's coach in 2003 ... Gordon promoted Philippe Berthoud to head coach. Berthoud has been an assistant at the school since 2003 ... Carl Capellas was hired as head coach at Hiram. During the past season, Capellas, who takes over for Dan Palmer, was an assistant at Case Western Reserve ... Newbury appointed Richard A. Rollins as head coach. Rollins formerly coached at Franklin Pierce and Middlebury.

Men's soccer assistants -- Travis Beauchamp was tabbed as an assistant coach at Merchant Marine ... Greg Scruton was added as an assistant at Gordon ... Maryville (Missouri) selected Todd Wallace as assistant soccer coach and assistant to athletics administration. Wallace was a 2004 graduate of Loyola (Illinois).

Adam Nirenberg accepted responsibilities as head coach at Ozarks (Arkansas). For the past two seasons, Nirenberg has worked as an assistant men's and women's coach at Concordia (Illinois) ... Minnesota State Moorhead appointed Rollie Bulock as head coach to replace Eric Swanbeck. Bulock has been head coach at Wayne State (Nebraska) since 2002 ... North Dakota's Matt Granstrand resigned as head coach.

Softball -- Christine Vogt was named as head coach at Dartmouth ... Heather Tarr was hired as head coach at Washington. Tarr, who replaces Teresa Wilson, has been an assistant at Pacific for six seasons ... Minnesota State Moorhead selected Rhonda Denbow as head coach. Denbow has been pitching coach at Valley City State University since March ... Bucknell selected Heather Rakosik as head coach. Rakosik has spent the past three seasons as head coach at Ohio Wesleyan.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Natalie Koukis accepted duties as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Wittenberg ... Gary Ackerson resigned after two years as head men's and women's coach at Augustana (Illinois) ... Matt Barany, head men's coach at James Madison for the past three seasons, was named as director of swimming and diving. The school also announced Samantha Smith as co-head coach ... Ohio chose Russ Dekker as men's and women's diving coach. Dekker has worked in the same capacity at Wyoming for the past three seasons ... Melinda Williams accepted responsibilities as head coach at Regis (Massachusetts) to replace Christa Gillis. Williams has been an assistant swimming coach and assistant water polo coach at Macalester.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- James Madison selected Sergei Beliaev as an assistant coach ... Naya Higashijima was named as an assistant at UC Santa Barbara. Higashijima, who replaces Brandon Seider, was an undergraduate assistant at Oregon State last season.

Men's and women's tennis -- Michael Leonard was appointed as director of tennis operations and head men's tennis coach at Elon. The school also announced Elizabeth Perry as head women's tennis coach to succeed the retired Tom Parham. Leonard was tennis director at the Raleigh (North Carolina) Racquet Club since 1995. Perry was an assistant at Auburn last year ... Florida Southern chose Scott Linn as head men's coach to succeed Jeff Kutac. Linn has spent the past five seasons as head men's and women's coach at Embry-Riddle ... Macalester tabbed Jason Muhl as head men's coach to replace Eric Eberhardt ... Allison Joanlanne was named as head women's coach at Misericordia. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition this year. Joanlanne has been a professional tennis instructor in New York for the past four years ... Colby-Sawyer tabbed Sean McCaffrey as head women's coach. For the past nine seasons, McCaffrey has guided the boys' tennis squad at Hanover (New Hampshire) High School ... Florida State chose Jennifer Hyde as head women's coach ... Jill Breslin was awarded responsibilities as head women's coach at Louisiana-Monroe.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Majorie Terburgh-Muller was named as an assistant women's coach at Texas A&M.

Men's and women's track and field -- Eastern Mennonite promoted Seth D. McGuffin to head coach. McGuffin, who has been an assistant since 1998, takes over for Paul D. Johnson.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Meredith Davis was selected as an assistant women's coach at Minnesota State Mankato.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Shannon Mincey was tabbed as head women's coach at Carson-Newman ... Assumption named Bob Stein as head women's coach. Stein has been head girls' volleyball coach for eight years and boys' lacrosse coach in 2003-04 at the Bancroft School in Massachusetts ... Peter Cosmiano was hired as head coach at Mississippi College. For the past six seasons, Cosmiano has worked as head women's coach at Millsaps ... Wayne State (Michigan) announced Ernie Gilbert as head women's coach. Gilbert, who replaces Limin Jin, has been an assistant at Cleveland State for the past year.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Augustana (Illinois) selected Melissa Kurth as an assistant women's coach ... Sarah Chlebana was named as an assistant at Syracuse. Chlebana, who was an assistant coach at Belmont, succeeds Alexis Dankulic ... Ryan Theis was named as an assistant women's coach at Northwestern... Washington State appointed Jody Paperno Garry as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's water polo -- Bill Harris was selected as head coach at Fordham.

Wrestling -- Eric Reed was chosen as head coach at Central (Iowa), replacing Matt Diehl. For the past two years, Reed has served as head wrestling coach and director of wellness at Wabash ... Buena Vista added Mark Schwab as head coach. Schwab has been coaching at Minnesota for the past nine seasons ... Wisconsin-Whitewater announced Tim Fader as head coach. Fader, who was head coach at Wisconsin-La Crosse for six seasons, succeeds the retired Willie Myers ... Rafael Vega was elevated to head coach at Williams to replace Mike Whalen, who was chosen as head football coach at the school in February.

Staff

Administrative -- Syracuse named Molly Malgieri as coordinator of career development for athletics.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Toledo added Todd Gerlt and Sara McGriff as assistant athletic trainers. Gerlt has been a graduate assistant at Missouri and McGriff was a graduate assistant at Georgia for the past two years.

Compliance -- Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne hired Abbie Renaker as compliance officer.

Compliance assistants -- Andrew Louthain was chosen as assistant compliance director at Marshall. Louthain, who takes over for Michael Hill, has been a compliance assistant at Central Michigan ... Melanie DeBoer was named as administrative assistant/assistant director of compliance at Loyola (Illinois). DeBoer was an intern at the school in 2003.

Facilities assistant -- Loyola (Illinois) selected Shaun McTigue as assistant facilities director/equipment manager. For the past two years, McTigue has worked as director of athletics at Sacred Heart School (Illinois).

Marketing/promotions assistants -- Oberlin appointed Colleen Wrenn as special assistant to the athletics director for marketing and promotions. Most recently, Wrenn was an operations and Olympic sports intern at North Carolina ... Evansville added Kelly Swartz and Ike Fullard III as assistants in external affairs.

Sports information -- Florida Southern promoted Bill Turnage to sports information director to succeed Tim Carpenter, who will continue as assistant sports information director at the school. Turnage has been assistant sports information director for the Moccasins since 2002 ... George Ellis was released as sports information director at North Dakota State. Ellis has been at the school for 30 years and was head baseball coach from 1980 to 1984. North Dakota State women's sports information director Jeff Swartz was chosen as Ellis' interim successor.

Danah Allen and Matthew Heidt were selected as athletics communications interns at Syracuse. Allen was a media relations staff assistant at Indiana and Heidt was a graduate assistant in athletics communications at Canisius and has been a customer service representative with the NFL's Buffalo Bills since 2003 ... Jacksonville tabbed Koby Padgett as a media relations assistant. Padgett was a 2003 graduate of Mississippi State, where he also worked as a student assistant for five years ... Kevin Hesser, a student sports information assistant at Nebraska Wesleyan, was chosen as sports information graduate assistant at University of Sioux Falls.

Strength and conditioning -- Manhattanville chose Mark Joseloff as strength and conditioning coach. Joseloff was a strength and conditioning intern at Air Force in 2003 ... J.C. Moreau was awarded responsibilities as head women's strength coach at Arkansas.

Strength and conditioning assistants -- Ray Eady was tabbed as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Akron. During the 2003-04 academic year, Eady fulfilled the same responsibilities at Northeastern ... Wagner named Domenic Reno as strength and conditioning coach for football.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference has announced the following as officers for the 2004-05 academic year: Timothy Cloyd, president at Hendrix, chair; Frances Lucas, president at Millsaps; Bob Bottoms, president at DePauw; Danny Powell, athletics director at Hendrix, chair of the SCAC Athletics Directors Council ... The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference named Sandra Michael, athletics director at Holy Family, as president and named Chris Morgan, director of athletics at Goldey-Beacom, as vice-president. Michael and Morgan succeed Caldwell's Mark Corino and Teikyo Post's Dan Mara. Keith Davie of Nyack and Sheila Wooton of Bloomfield were re-elected as secretary and treasurer, respectively ... Conference USA hired Ryan Powell as assistant director of media relations, Alfred White as associate commissioner for administration and Kelly Carney as associate commissioner for marketing and television. Powell has been a graduate assistant in athletics media relations at Memphis for the past two years. White has been president of the NBA/NDBL Asheville Altitude since 2001 and formerly was commissioner of the Southern Conference. The following individuals were selected as officers for the College Athletic Business Managers Assocation for the 2004-05 academic year: Jamie Pollard, Wisconsin, president; Dave Marmion, Wake Forest, first vice-president; Carolyn Struck, DePaul, second vice-president; Daren Spease, Charlotte, third vice-president; Dawn Reynolds, Miami (Florida), past president. The CABMA announced Peter Fields, director of athletics at Montana State, as manager of the year. The organization also named John Moore, former associate athletics director at South Carolina, as the recipient of the Ken E. Farris Sr. Award for lifetime achievement in the field of athletics business management. Laurie Gustafson, former associate athletics director at Iowa State, was recognized as the recipient of the George Eldgride Award. Dennis Helsel, associate commissioner at Conference USA, and Herb Schmidt, associate athletics director at Penn State, were recognized with 25-year service awards.

Corrections

An item in the index on the front page of the June 21 edition of The NCAA News incorrectly referred to the University of California, Los Angeles, as the winner of the Division I Men's Golf Championships team title. The University of California, Berkeley, won this year's men's golf title. UCLA won the team title in Division I women's golf.

The position Bernard Baruch's Joseph Williams recently accepted was incorrectly identified in the June 21 issue of The NCAA Record. Williams was named as an assistant men's basketball coach at the school.

The title for Demetrius Marlowe was incorrectly listed with the guest editorial in the July 5 issue of The NCAA News. Marlowe is assistant to the vice-president for student affairs and assistant director of intramural sports and recreative services at Michigan State University and president of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics.

School name changes

Mary Washington College officially changed its name to the University of Mary Washington, effective immediately.

DEATHS

Faith Gabelnick, president emerita at Pacific (Oregon), died June 13. Gabelnick was 60.

Marjorie Hower, former athletics administrator at Baldwin-Wallace, died May 24. Hower, 85, formerly was director of women's athletics at the school.

Former Northwest Missouri State football student-athlete Sherman Wilderness died July 6. He was 28. In addition to earning all-America honors at offensive lineman, he was a two-year letter-winner and a member of the school's 1998 NCAA Division II Football Championship team.

Burt Kahn, former head men's basketball coach and athletics director at Quinnipiac, died July 6. He was 74. Kahn was athletics director at the school from 1961 to 1995 and led the men's squad from 1961 to 1991.

Former DePaul and Northern Illinois assistant men's basketball coach Jay W. Goedert died July 4. Goedert was 44.
