Sunshine State leader announces retirement

Don Landry, commissioner of the Sunshine State Conference, has announced plans to retire, effective August 1.

Landry has overseen the league for 10 years. In that span, he established the first league office and conference membership has grown to nine schools under his watch, the largest it has been in the conference's 28-year history.

Before accepting the commissioner's post at the Sunshine State Conference in 1994, Landry was director of special projects for MLB's Texas Rangers. From 1990 to 1993, he worked as executive director for the National Cutting Horse Association after spending three years as commissioner of the Southland Conference. Landry joined the Southland from Nicholls State. He served as head men's basketball coach at the school for 13 years and assumed responsibilities as director of athletics there from 1979 to 1987. In addition, he completed stints as a high-school coach and as an assistant men's basketball coach at Louisiana Tech.

Landry, a 1960 graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette, formerly served as chair of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee and formerly was president of the Division II Commissioners Association.

Chief executive officers

Lewis and Clark named Thomas J. Hochstettler as president, effective August 16. Hochstettler has been vice-president for academic affairs at International University Bremen (Germany) ... Mercy President Lucie Lapovsky resigned, effective July 1 ... E. Joseph Lee resigned as president at Thomas More ... Peter McPherson resigned as president at Michigan State, effective January 1, 2005 ... Trinity (Connecticut) President Borden W. Painter Jr. will retire, effective July 1 ... Upper Iowa selected Alan G. Walker as president, effective July 1. Walker has been vice-provost of academic affairs for extended university programs at Western Michigan.

Directors of athletics

Chris Peterson was awarded a five-year contract extension as athletics director at Arkansas-Little Rock ... Mississippi State agreed to terms with Athletics Director Larry Templeton on a one-year contract extension ... Jim Fallis was hired as director of athletics at Northern Arizona. Since 1993, Fallis has been athletics director at Northern Colorado. Bob Heiny was appointed as Fallis' interim successor at Northern Colorado, effective June 14. Heiny serves as the school's faculty athletics representative and has been a professor of mathematical statistics since 1968 ... Beloit named Kim Chandler as the school's first full-time athletics director to replace Ed DeGeorge, who has been head football coach and director of athletics since 1985. DeGeorge will retain head football coaching duties. Chandler has been senior woman administrator, assistant athletics director for business affairs and head women's basketball coach at Saginaw Valley State ... South Carolina State named Charlene M. Johnson as athletics director. Johnson has most recently fulfilled the post on an interim basis ... Mark Wilson was hired as the first full-time director of athletics at Tennessee Tech. Wilson has been a member of the athletics administration at Ohio since 1996 and has been senior associate athletics director for external affairs since 2003 ... Valparaiso named Mark LaBarbera as athletics director ... Montana chose Don Read as director of athletics to succeed Wayne Hogan. Read formerly was head football coach at the school from 1986 to 1995 and led the Grizzlies to the 1995 Division I-AA Football Championship ... Arkansas-Little Rock awarded a contract extension to Chris Peterson, director of athletics, through June 2009.

Senior woman administrator

Linda Spradley was selected as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director for internal operations at Northern Colorado. Spradley has worked as director of athletics at Simpson since 2000.

Associate directors of athletics

Trinity (Texas) elevated Julie Jenkins to associate athletics director for compliance and promoted Jacob Tingle to associate athletics director for facilities and recreational sports ... Gregory J. Walaitis was named as associate athletics director for development at Fresno State. For the past year, Walaitis has worked as director of marketing partnerships at the Phoenix International Raceway.

Assistant directors of athletics

Justin Parker was elevated to assistant athletics director for facilities and sports information ... Karen Stromme was elevated to an assistant athletics director at Minnesota Duluth.

Coaches

Baseball -- Illinois-Chicago extended the contract of head coach Mike Dee for four years through 2008 ... Tom Randolph resigned as head coach at Wentworth Institute. Randolph has guided the program since August 2000 ... Xavier's John Morrey resigned as head coach.

Men's basketball -- Shaun Golden was selected as head coach at Newberry ... Leonard Hamilton, head coach at Florida State since the 2002-03 season, signed a three-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season ... Oneonta State hired Vincent Medici as head coach to replace Paul Clune. For the past nine years, Clune has worked as head coach at Hudson Valley Community College ... Mike Anderson was awarded a five-year contract extension as head coach at Alabama-Birmingham. Anderson has been in charge of the program for two seasons ... Averett chose Jimmy Allen as head coach ... Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery resigned to become head coach for the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Montgomery has guided the Cardinal for the past 18 seasons. Stanford chose Trent Johnson as Montgomery's replacement. Johnson has been head coach at Nevada and formerly was an assistant coach for the Cardinal ... Steve Shields, head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock, was awarded a five-year contract extension through June 2009.

Men's basketball assistants -- North Dakota promoted Randall Herbst to associate head coach. Herbst has been an assistant coach for four seasons ... Terry Weigand accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Akron ... Jason Kent was hired as an assistant at Chicago State to replace Travis Williams. Kent has been head coach at Huston-Tillotson College for three seasons ... Montana named Brad Huse as an assistant coach. For the past eight years, Huse has been head coach at Jamestown College ... Adams State assistant Mike Moskowitz resigned to become head coach at Si Tanka University ... Scott Shepherd resigned after five seasons as an assistant at Virginia ... Southern Methodist added Dean Christian as an assistant. Since 2001, Christian has been coaching at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and formerly spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Air Force ... Florida International appointed Joe O'Brien as associate head coach. During an eight-year tenure as head coach at Southeastern (Iowa) Community College, O'Brien has led the school to National Junior College Athletic Association national championships in 2000, 2003 and 2004 ... Women's basketball assistants -- Casimir Grygorcewicz resigned as an assistant coach at Brown ... Mount Olive hired Brandy Smith as an assistant coach to replace Mandy Ramfjord. Smith is a 2004 graduate of the school and was a member of the women's basketball team ... Jon Harper and Stephanie McCromick were added as assistant coaches at Western Carolina ... Josh Springer was appointed as an assistant at Tusculum. Most recently, Springer, who succeeds Nikki Sullivan, has been an assistant at Emory and Henry ... Kansas State added Shelley Jarrard and Stephanie White as assistant coaches to replace Sue Serafini and Kristin Becker. Jarrard has been an assistant coach at Utah for 10 years and White was a member of Purdue's 1999 national championship team and has played professionally in the WNBA ... Emporia State added Ali Sprague as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Ray Appenheimer was selected as head men's and women's cross country coach and assistant men's and women's track and field coach at Oberlin. Appenheimer has been an assistant coach with the Nike Farm Team ... Todd Deely was hired as head men's and women's cross country coach and assistant men's and women's track and field coach at Simpson. Deely, who replaces Erin Bresnan, has been head men's and women's cross country coach at Roger Williams since 1998 ... Tennessee Tech elevated Tony Cox to head cross country and track and field coach to replace Jim Greeson. Cox has worked as an assistant coach for the past two seasons.

Equestrian -- Teresa Slough was appointed as head coach at Kansas State.

Field hockey -- American International named Maria Cardaropoli as head field hockey coach and head women's lacrosse coach.

Field hockey assistant -- Liz Sanders was tabbed as an assistant coach at Ball State.

Football -- Penn State awarded Joe Paterno a four-year contract extension through 2008. Paterno, the all-time leader in college football victories, has guided the Nittany Lions to a 339-109-3 record in 39 years as head coach ... Louisiana College selected Norman Joseph as head coach to replace Marty Secord. Joseph formerly has coached at Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern State, Northeast Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, Belhaven, San Jose State and Midwestern State.

Football assistants -- Steve Spurrier Jr. was hired as tight ends coach at Arizona. Spurrier, who replaces John Peterson, has been wide receivers coach with the NFL's Washington Redskins for the past two years ... Lafayette chose Antoine Smith as defensive line coach ... Ian Falconer was named as associate head coach and offensive line coach at Oberlin. Falconer, who has been with the program on an interim basis since January, formerly coached at Lewis and Clark ... Cornell College added Darnell Wiltz as an assistant football coach and assistant track and field coach. Wiltz, a 2003 graduate of the school, has been an intern with the football squad and in the athletics department at Cornell the for the past year ... Greg Jackson was hired as cornerbacks coach at Louisiana-Monroe to replace Tim Rebowe. Jackson, who formerly played professionally in the NFL, was secondary coach at Idaho last season.

Men's and women's golf -- Ball State head women's coach Shelley Sanders resigned ... Wayne Fisher resigned after nine years as head coach at Utah.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Colby appointed David Venditti as head women's coach. For the past four years, Venditti has been head women's coach at Southern Maine.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Pace's John Jez resigned as equipment manager and head men's lacrosse coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Kristie Baldwin was appointed as head women's coach at New England. Baldwin filled the post on an interim basis during the 2004 season.

Rifle -- Wil Caissie resigned as head coach at Wentworth Institute. Caissie, who spent two years as interim head coach before being promoted to the post permanently last year, has led the program to two Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference championships.

Men's and women's rowing -- Hamilton hired Eric Summers as head men's and women's coach. For the past two seasons, Summers has worked as head men's varsity coach at Colgate.

Men's soccer -- Noah Kooiman was selected as interim head men's and women's coach at Cal State San Bernardino. Kooiman, who replaces Christian Johnson, has been an assistant coach for the past three seasons.

Men's soccer assistants -- Limestone named Tori Beeler as an assistant coach ... Cle Kooiman was chosen as an assistant at Cal State San Bernardino.

Women's soccer -- Trinity (Texas) chose Lance Key as head coach. Key, who replaces Greg Ashton, has been an assistant men's soccer coach at the school for the past four years ... Widener chose Stefanie May as head coach ... Matt Clark was hired as head coach at Elon. Clark has been head women's coach at Southern Mississippi since July 2000.

Women's soccer assistants -- Butler selected Tari St. John as an assistant coach ... Jessica Celi accepted duties as an assistant coach at Clemson ... Lakeland tabbed Tina Weaver as an assistant.

Softball -- Tom Cross accepted additional responsibilities as head coach at Macalester. Cross, who will continue as football offensive coordinator, has been interim head softball coach for the past year ... Rockhurst named Galen Struve as head coach. Struve formerly has coached at Avila College, William Jewell College and UMKC ... Debbie Bilbao resigned as head coach at Utah State ... Southern Utah's Laurel Simmons resigned as head coach, effective June 30 ... Deanna Parks resigned after eight seasons as head coach at Akron.

Softball assistant -- Akron's Shelby Howell resigned as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Kevin Mabie was hired as head men's and women's swimming coach at Webster.

Men's and women's tennis -- Florida State's Lise Gregory resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Leroy Solomon resigned as head men's and women's track and field coach at CCNY ... Ramapo head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach John Nepolitan resigned.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Stephen Fenton resigned as head women's coach at Bloomfield ... Shane Pinder took over as head coach at Liberty ... Quincy head men's and women's coach Tim Koth resigned to become head women's coach at Northwood. Koth has guided Quincy's women's program since 1996 and has been in charge of the men's program since 1997 ... Mercyhurst will not renew the contract of head men's coach Craig Davic ... Nebraska Wesleyan named Gina Chambers as interim head coach. Chambers succeeds Tom Symons, who resigned ... Ricci Luyties was selected as head coach at Southern Mississippi ... Men's and women's water polo -- Aaron Cavagnolo resigned as head women's coach at Staten Island.

Wrestling -- James Madison named Josh Hutchens as head coach.

Wrestling assistants -- Mike Clayton and Bill Maldonado were added as assistants at Army. Clayton has been head coach at the Newport News Apprentice School in Virginia for five years. Maldonado has served as head coach of the Cyclone Wrestling Club at Iowa State since 2002.

Staff

Administrative -- James Hill was promoted to assistant to the athletics director at Trinity (Texas).

Broadcasting -- Army chose Rich DeMarco as director of broadcasting. For the past two years, DeMarco has been host of a nightly call-in show and a weekly college and high-school scoreboard show for a New Jersey station.

Compliance assistant -- Melissa Boettger assumed responsibilities as assistant director of compliance at James Madison.

Concessions -- Utah added David Lingo as concessions manager.

Development -- Minnesota State Mankato named Stefanie Kelly as director of athletics development.

Marketing/promotions -- Megan Wright was named as director of athletics event management at Wichita State. For the past two years, Wright has been a graduate assistant in the school's athletics department ... Utah hired Casey Fox as director of marketing. For the past three years, Fox has worked as assistant director of marketing at Navy ... Brian Gabel was selected as interim director of marketing and promotions at Minnesota State Mankato.

Sports information -- Matthew Kifer was hired as sports information director at Waynesburg. Kifer, who replaces Justin Zackal, has been a student assistant in the school's sports information department for three years ... Shippensburg's John Alosi announced plans to retire as sports information director ... Widener tabbed James Wagner as sports information director.

Corrections

Florida Southern head softball coach Chris Bellotto's name was misspelled and her gender was misidentified in a Division II Softball Championship summary that appeared in the May 24 NCAA News. Bellotto has been coaching at Florida Southern for 23 years and has compiled more than 800 career victories. She led the 1993 Moccasins to the national championship.

The name of NCAA Coaches Academy Expert Coaching Program participant Rodney Garner was misspelled in a story that appeared in the May 24 issue of The NCAA News. Garner is an assistant football coach at the University of Georgia.

The school at which Scott Losche was appointed head baseball coach was misidentified in the May 25 edition of The NCAA Record. Losche was named as head coach at CCNY.

Notables

The All-American Football Foundation announced the late Pat Tillman as recipient of the Admiral Thomas J. Hamilton Award. Tillman, a former football student-athlete at Arizona State, gave up his professional football career with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals to join the military. He recently died in action in Afghanistan.

Deaths

Dan Allen, former head football coach at Holy Cross, died May 16 at the age of 48. Allen was an assistant coach at the school from 1982 to 1989 and served as head coach at Holy Cross from 1996 to 2003. He also was head coach at Boston University for six years.

Former Bradley student-athlete and athletics administrator Billy Stone died May 16. He was 78. Stone competed on the school's football team at the halfback position from 1946 to 1948 before playing professionally with the Baltimore Colts of the All-American Football League and the NFL's Chicago Bears. Stone served as head football coach at Bradley from 1955 until 1970, when the program was dissolved. In addition, he fulfilled responsibilities as an assistant athletics director and head men's golf coach.

Hartwell McPhail, former head football coach, athletics director and chairman of the health and physical education department at Mississippi College, died May 5. McPhail was 83.

Former Lawrence President Thomas S. Smith died May 12. Smith was 83.

Yale senior men's basketball student-athlete Josh Hill died in a one-car accident May 27. Hill, a center, averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds during the 2001-02 season. He played only five games in the 2002-03 season due to injury and missed the entire 2003-04 season.

Former West Chester soccer coach Mel Lorback died of leukemia May 22. He was 76. Lorback guided the program from 1957 to 1991 and captured the NCAA Division I championship in 1961. He also served on the Division I Men's Soccer Committee.
