LeTourneau names Fennell to head posts

Fennell is a kinesiology professor at the school.

Fennell spent 16 years as a volleyball coach at the high-school level.

During that span, she guided teams to multiple district, bi-district and area championships. In addition, the eight-time district coach of the year twice led squads to regional final appearances and once advanced to state semifinal competition. An active member of the Texas Girls Coaches Association, Fennell served four years on the organization's board of directors.

Fennell earned an associate's degree at Kilgore Junior College, a bachelor's degree in education at Stephen F. Austin and a master's degree in education at East Texas State. She also earned a mid-management/superintendent certification at Stephen F. Austin.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point announced Linda Bunnell as chancellor. Bunnell formerly was senior vice-president for the College Board and is chancellor emerita at Colorado-Colorado Springs ... Vaughn Vandergrift was selected as president at Southern Illinois Edwardsville, effective July 1. Vandergrift, who succeeds the retiring David Werner, has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs and chief information officer at Georgia Southern since 2000.

Bellarmine selected Scott Wiegandt as athletics director ... Thomas Gioglio was appointed as athletics director at East Stroudsburg. For the past four years, Gioglio has worked as athletics director at Dakota State University ... Rhode Island chose Thomas McElroy as athletics director ... Tim Bald was announced as director of athletics at St. Norbert. Bald, who succeeds the retired Don Maslinski, has been assistant athletics director for compliance at Wisconsin ... Agnes Scott appointed Joeleen Akin as athletics director, effective July 1. Akin, who also serves as head women's basketball coach, has been interim athletics director since July 2003 ... Illinois State chose Linda Herman as interim athletics director ... Bill Stiles was selected as director of athletics at Chestnut Hill. Stiles has been assistant athletics director and assistant baseball coach at Ursinus for the past five years ... California Director of Athletics Steve Gladstone resigned after three years, though he will continue as head men's rowing coach, a position he has held since April 2001.

Jessica Hegmann was named as assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator at St. Peter's ... James Madison selected Shelia Moorman as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. Moorman was head women's basketball coach at the school from 1982 to 1997 and most recently has been athletics facilities and events coordinator there ... Deborah Polca was chosen as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Old Dominion. Most recently, Polca has served as senior associate athletics director at Eastern Illinois.

Mike Pratapas was appointed as senior associate athletics director at Pittsburgh ... North Carolina-Asheville named Ken Elder as associate athletics director for external operations for development and marketing to succeed Mark Wharton. For the past three years, Elder has been regional sales and marketing director for the University of Florida's Gator Network.

academic support and career development at Maryland ... Hilbert selected Kara Rehbaum as assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach ... Brad Pittman was hired as assistant athletics director for facilities and events at Wichita State. Pittman has worked as athletics facilities director at Western Kentucky since 2001 ... Texas-Pan American elevated Robert Davenport to head coach. For the past three years, Davenport has worked as associate head coach ... Western New England head coach Doug Pearson stepped down after six years as head men's basketball coach to become coordinator of physical education and head men's tennis coach at the school. Athletics Director Mike Theulen will assume additional responsibilities as head men's basketball coach ... Jimmy Allen was hired as head coach at Averett to replace Kirk Chandler. Allen has been associate head coach at Wofford ... Lewis chose Kyle Green as head coach. Green spent the 2003-04 season as an assistant at Marquette ... Women's basketball assistants -- Karen Curtis and Trevor Lampman were selected as assistant coaches at High Point ... Lehigh appointed Glenn Rigney and Milena Flores as assistant coaches ... Toni Leopard accepted duties as an assistant coach at Chattanooga ... Jacksonville named Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick as an assistant coach ... Cara Consuegra was chosen as an assistant coach at Marquette ... Canisius added Kendra Harris, Chris Vozab and Jenel Stevens as assistants. Harris has been an assistant coach at Hillsdale, and Vozab has most recently worked as an administrative assistant for basketball at New Hampshire. Stevens is a May graduate of the school where she earned recognition as the 2004 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the year ... North Dakota State selected Cara Pearson as an assistant. Men's and women's cross country -- Virginia Wesleyan hired Mat Littleton as head men's and women's coach to succeed Jackie Tugman ... Tom Service was appointed as head men's and women's coach at Santa Clara. Service takes over for John Maloney ... Northern Arizona elevated J.W. Hardy to head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach to succeed Ron Mann. Hardy has been an assistant for the Lumberjacks for the past seven years.

Field hockey -- St. Francis (Pennsylvania) named Elizabeth deSimas as head coach.

Field hockey assistant -- Liz Sanders, an assistant coach at Georgetown for the past two seasons, was chosen as an assistant coach at Ball State. Sanders replaces Annette Payne, who was elevated to head coach of the program.

Football -- Minnesota State Mankato head coach Clarence Holley resigned after two seasons.

Football assistants -- Dave Scott was appointed as tight ends and assistant special teams coach, and Lyle Hemphill was selected as a graduate assistant coach at Delaware. Scott, formerly a defensive assistant coach with the program from 1998 to 2001, replaces Rick Brown. Hemphill takes over for Brandon Walker ... McMurry promoted Tommy Sauceda to assistant head coach, Joel Baker to offensive coordinator and Donny Gray to special teams coordinator. Sauceda has been offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for five seasons, and Baker has spent the past two seasons as wide receivers and kickers coach. Gray has been secondary coach for two seasons ... Wisconsin-Stevens Point tabbed Dave Taynor as offensive line coach to replace Kevin Deates. For the past two years, Taynor, who also will serve as director of strength and conditioning, has fulfilled similar roles at Culver-Stockton ... Greg Sheeler was added as defensive backs coach and Pat Callahan was added as receivers coach at Bridgewater State. For the past two seasons, Sheeler served as an assistant at Stonehill. Callahan formerly was receivers coach at Stonehill ... Colorado named Craig Bray as defensive backs coach to replace Vance Joseph. Bray was linebackers coach at Arizona.

Men's and women's golf -- Joe Battaglia was hired as head women's coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point to succeed Mike Okray. Battaglia is the head golf professional at Tri-City Golf Course in Wisconsin.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Colby hired David Venditti as head women's coach. For the past four years, Venditti has guided the women's program at Southern Maine.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Katie Hawke was hired as head women's coach at Springfield. Hawke has been head squash coach, assistant women's lacrosse coach and a visiting lecturer in physical education at Mount Holyoke since 2001 ... Chrissy Lombard was promoted to head women's coach at George Washington. Lombard, who has been an assistant with the program since 2002, replaces Jennifer Morris.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Tufts tabbed Jesse Miller as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's skiing -- Timothy Paul Stone was selected as interim head Nordic ski coach at Colby. Stone worked as head coach at Williams in 2002 and 2003 and was an assistant at the school during the 2003-04 season.

Men's soccer -- John Mello accepted responsibilities as head coach at Rhode Island ... Case Western Reserve named Dan Palmer as head coach.

Women's soccer -- Fresno State added Steve Springthorpe as head coach. In the past five years, Springthorpe has led Florida to three Southeastern Conference regular-season championships, three SEC tournament titles and four appearances in the NCAA tournament ... Robyn Serge was hired as head women's soccer coach and assistant softball coach at Rockford. Serge, who was head women's soccer coach at Beloit in 2002 and 2003, replaces Frank Mateus.

Women's soccer assistants -- San Diego State chose Mike Friesen and Andrea Alfiler as assistant coaches.

Softball -- Laura Cymmerman resigned as head coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) ... Ann Munzenmaier was hired as head coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. For the past two seasons, Munzenmaier, who replaces interim head coach Kelly Erickson, has been a graduate assistant at Minnesota State Mankato.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Rock Snow retired as head men's and women's coach at Ohio Northern.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Chris Waters was chosen as an assistant men's and women's coach at Syracuse. Waters, who replaced the retired Jeff Keck, was head diving coach at Southwest Missouri State for one season.

Men's and women's tennis -- Colgate named Patrick Fisher as head men's and women's coach ... Jennifer Kolins stepped down as head men's coach at Western New England to accept duties as CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator at the school. Kolins will continue as head women's coach. Doug Peterson, who resigned as men's basketball coach, was named as Kolins' successor ... Joe Testa was appointed as head men's coach at Rhode Island, replacing Kelly Chartier. From 2000 to 2004, Testa worked as varsity head girls' coach at St. Mary's-Bay View Academy in Rhode Island ... Bridgewater State announced Filipe Miguel as head women's coach. Miguel formerly guided the men's and women's programs at the school from 1996 to 1998 ... Rick Mobley was awarded additional responsibilities as head men's coach at Carroll College. Mobley, who takes over for Greg Rabidoux, has been head men's soccer coach since 1999 and sports information director since 2000.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Erik Olson was appointed as head coach at Central Michigan. Olson has been an assistant coach at Miami (Florida) for the past three seasons ... Anna Tool was chosen as head women's coach at Virginia Wesleyan, replacing Jennifer Strauss ... Matt Kerr accepted responsibilities as head women's coach at Chestnut Hill ... Philadelphia Biblical announced Julie Hubbard as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Jill Schopieray was hired as an assistant women's coach at Bradley. Most recently, Schopieray has served as head varsity coach at Big Rapids (Michigan) High School ... Lisa Axel was chosen as an assistant women's coach at North Dakota State. Axel, who takes over for Jason Allen, is a 2004 graduate of Minnesota, where she was a four-year member of the volleyball squad.

Staff

Athletic trainer -- Melissa Williams was promoted to head athletic trainer at Averett. Williams has been an assistant athletic trainer at the school since September 2002.

Sports information -- Joey Mullins accepted duties as sports information director at Samford.

Strength and conditioning -- Pace's Jeanine Michealsen resigned as strength and conditioning coach.

Conferences

The American Southwest Conference named the following officers for the 2004-05 year: Tim Summerlin, president at Schreiner, president; Alvin O. Austin, president at LeTourneau, vice-president; and Lanny Hall, president at Howard Payne, past president.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference extended the contract of Commissioner Richard J. Ensor through June 30, 2007. Ensor has been in charge of the league since August 1998. The conference also elevated Ken Taylor to assistant commissioner of championships and named Tara Larkin as director of championships and special events. Julie Byron was chosen as director of women's basketball operations.

School name changes

Bryant College will change its name to Bryant University, effective August 25.

The University of the Pacific (California) changed its name to University of the Pacific.

Notables

Alan Knipe, head men's volleyball coach at Long Beach State, was announced as the 2004 Tachikara/American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Divisions I-II men's national coach of the year. Knipe is in his fourth season with the 49ers and led the team to an appearance in the 2004 National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship title match ... Denver men's ice hockey goaltender Adam Berkhoel was chosen as the collegiate player of the year by USA Hockey. The senior helped Denver capture its first national championship since 1969. Berkhoel was named most valuable player of the 2004 Frozen Four.

DEATHS

Former Carleton football student-athlete Aaron Cox died in an automobile accident May 28. He was 32. Cox was a 1994 graduate of the school and helped the Knights to the 1992 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and their only NCAA playoff appearance.

Ronalda Pierce, a women's basketball student-athlete at Florida State, died June 8. She was 19. At center, Pierce averaged 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds in her freshman year with the Seminoles.

E. Doyle Smith Jr., a former athletics administrator at Virginia, died June 1 at the age of 60. Smith spent 31 years with the school's athletics department, including serving as associate athletics media relations director, before retiring in 1999. He also worked as information director for the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association from 1973 to 1995.
