Texas-Pan American names Moses SWA

Texas-Pan American has named Pegjohngy Moses as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for compliance services. Moses takes over for Charolette Hunt, who resigned to become director of compliance for Conference USA.

Most recently, Moses has fulfilled responsibilities as assistant director of athletics for compliance at Chattanooga. Before that appointment, she completed stints as compliance coordinator and director of compliance at UCF. In addition, Moses formerly was compliance coordinator at Cornell and an athletics administration intern at Brown.

Moses earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science and history at Duke and is a 1998 graduate of Tulane Law School.

Chief executive officers

Jerry M. Greiner was named as president at Arcadia to succeed the retiring Bette F. Landman, effective July 1. Greiner has been provost at Hamline since 1999 ... Auburn President William Walker resigned after 19 months ... Fisk chose Charles R. Fuget as interim president. Fuget formerly was interim president at Indiana (Pennsylvania) ... Richard H. Brodhead, dean of Yale College and a professor of English at Yale, was chosen as president at Duke, effective July 1 ... Robert M. Galecke, senior vice-president for finance and administration at Dallas, was named as interim president at the school ... Rice announced David W. Leebron as president, effective July 1. Leebron has been a professor of law and dean of the law school at Columbia ... Carol A. Mooney was named as president at St. Mary's (Indiana), effective June 1. Mooney has been university vice-president and associate provost at Notre Dame ... Glenville State selected Robert N. Freeman as president. Freeman has been interim president at the school ... Derek J. Hodgson resigned as president at Indiana (Pennsylvania).

Directors of athletics

St. Bonaventure appointed Ronald Zwierlein as athletics director to succeed Gothard Lane, who resigned. Zwierlein has been senior associate vice-president for student affairs at Bowling Green ... Jim Sterk, athletics director at Washington State, signed a five-year contract extension ... Wisconsin-Parkside named David Williams as director of athletics. Williams has been filling the position on an interim basis since January 2001 ... Dick Thompson was announced as interim athletics director at Washington. Thompson, who succeeds the retired Barbara Hedges, has been director of government relations at the school ... Rob Spear was selected as director of athletics to replace Mike Bohn. Spear has been interim athletics director at the school ... Ferrum named Abe Neff as director of athletics. Neff, who succeeds Ted Kinder, will continue as head baseball coach at the school, a position he has held for the past 19 seasons.

Associate directors of athletics

Gregg Fort was hired as associate athletics director for development at Florida International ... Northwestern's Ken Kraft announced plans to retire as senior associate athletics director. Kraft spent 22 years as the school's head wrestling coach before retiring in 1979 to become associate athletics director ... Brad Bertani was named as associate director of athletics for compliance at Tennessee ... Washington promoted Chip Lydum to associate athletics director. Since 1994, Lydum has worked as assistant athletics director for facilities, event management and capitol projects ... Hawaii hired John McNamara as associate athletics director for external affairs. Since 1999, McNamara has served as associate commissioner for external affairs for Conference USA.

Assistant directors of athletics

UMBC appointed Jason Lerner as assistant athletics director for fund-raising. Since October 2001, Lerner has been an assistant athletics director at Morehead State ... Gary Holden was promoted to assistant athletics director at Ferrum. Holden will continue as head men's tennis coach and sports information director.

Coaches

Baseball assistant -- Stu Rose assumed duties as an assistant coach at Detroit Mercy.

Men's basketball -- John Calipari, head coach at Memphis, was awarded a three-year contract extension through 2010. Calipari is in his fourth season with the program.

Women's basketball assistant -- Akron chose Tamie Wilson as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Lars Porter was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Birmingham-Southern, effective June 1. Porter has been a member of the school's men's squad for the past four years.

Field hockey -- James Madison hired Antionette Lucas as head coach. For the past two seasons, Lucas has worked as an assistant at New Hampshire.

Football -- Earlham named Gerry Keesling as head coach ... Elon appointed Paul Hamilton as head coach. For the past seven years, Hamilton has been head coach at East Tennessee State ... John Zernhelt was promoted to head coach at Citadel. Zernhelt, who has been offensive coordinator, replaces Ellis Johnson ... Alton Lavan was announced as head coach at Delaware State. For the past two seasons, Lavan has been at Eastern Michigan, where he was an assistant head coach and most recently served as interim head coach ... Paul Krohn stepped down after 11 seasons as head coach at Elmhurst to focus on responsibilities as athletics director at the school ... Dennis Darnell resigned after five years as head coach at East Central to become offensive coordinator at Southwest Missouri State ... Southwest Minnesota State chose Eric Eidsness as head coach. Eidsness, who succeeds Curt Strasheim, has been offensive coordinator at South Dakota State for five seasons.

Football assistants -- Akron selected Jim Fleming, Harold Goodwin and Matt Wallerstedt as assistant coaches. The school also selected Matt Williamson as director of football operations ... Charleston Southern appointed Jamie Chadwell as running backs coach and Darrell Perkins as secondary coach and special teams coordinator ... Mike DeBord was chosen as football recruiting coordinator and special teams coach at Michigan ... Nebraska released Bo Pelini, secondary coach Marvin Sanders, linebackers coach Jimmy Williams, defensive line coach Jeff Jamrog, running backs coach Tim Albin, wide receivers coach Ron Brown, and offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Barney Cotton. The school also announced Turner Gill will continue with the program as receivers coach and that Dennis Wagner, offensive line coach at Fresno State for the past six years, was chosen as offensive line coach ... David Reaves was elevated to assistant secondary coach at South Carolina ... Arizona hired Mike Canales as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Mike Tuiasosopo as defensive line coach. Canales has been wide receivers coach with the NFL's New York Jets and Tuiasosopo was defensive tackles coach at Utah last year ... Rusty Russell was released as defensive coordinator and Levorn Harbin was released as defensive ends and special teams coach at Georgia Southern. Russell has been with the program since 1997 and Harbin has been with the school since 2002 ... Iowa State added Barney Cotton as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach and Todd Fitch as quarterbacks coach. Cotton most recently was released as an assistant at Nebraska and Fitch has worked as quarterbacks coach at South Carolina for four years ... Washington hired Chris Tormey as linebackers coach to replace Tim Hundley. Tormey was head coach at Nevada for the past four years before being released this season ... Rick Minter, who was released as head coach at Cincinnati December 1, was named as defensive coordinator at South Carolina ... North Carolina added John Gutekunst as defensive coordinator at Minnesota ... Tennessee named Trooper Taylor as running backs coach and Jason Michael as a graduate assistant coach. Taylor, who succeeds Woody McCorvey, was an assistant coach at Tulane for five seasons and Michael, who replaces Shane Beamer, has been an assistant with the program for a year ... Duke selected Marty Galbraith as offensive coordinator ... Mike Collins accepted duties as defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State ... Bo Pelini was hired as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Oklahoma to replace Mike Stoops. Pelini had been defensive coordinator at Nebraska since 2002 and most recently was released from the school after serving as interim head coach at the end of the 2003 season ... Nebraska chose Phil Elmassian as secondary coach, Kevin Cosgrove as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and John Blake as defensive line coach. Elmassian has been defensive backs coach at Purdue, Cosgrove has spent the past nine seasons as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Wisconsin and Blake served as defensive line coach at Mississippi State for one season ... Utah named Gary Andersen as defensive tackles coach to replace Mike Tuiasosopo. Andersen has been head coach at Southern Utah for one season ... Hardee McCrary resigned as defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas. McCrary has been with the program for six years ... North Carolina appointed Marvin Sanders as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Sanders most recently was released as an assistant at Nebraska ... Mike McCarty was awarded responsibilities as receivers coach at Arkansas State. McCarty, who succeeds Dante Wright, has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Stony Brook since 2001.

Men's and women's golf -- Scott Moe was named as head women's coach at Gustavus Adolphus.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Massachusetts-Boston announced Michael Bertoni as interim head men's coach. Bertoni takes over for Jack Foley, who assumed a three-month medical leave.

Men's soccer -- Augsburg's Mike Navarre resigned as head men's coach, but will continue as head women's soccer coach ... Lance Watkins resigned as head coach at Erskine ... Tom Donahue was named as head coach at Molloy.

Women's soccer -- Greg Sheen was hired as head coach at Morehead State. Sheen has been director of the Dayton (Ohio) Soccer Academy and formerly coached at Dayton ... George Mason's Jac Cicala resigned after 12 years as head coach.

Women's soccer assistant -- Kate Cortis was appointed as an assistant coach at Minnesota.

Men's and women's tennis -- Missouri-St. Louis added Jason Hanes as head women's coach.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Jon Neeter was chosen as an assistant men's coach at Duke.

Men's and women's track and field -- McNeese State appointed Russ Buller as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Donnie Davis accepted responsibilities as an assistant women's coach at Elon. Since 1987, Davis has worked as head girls' track and field coach and assistant boys' coach at Cummings (North Carolina) High School.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Saint Louis selected Anne Kordes as head women's coach ... Morris Davis was hired as head coach at St. Mary's (Maryland) to replace Kelly Sampson, who resigned ... Samford chose Michelle Durban as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Winthrop named Rachel Harnack as an assistant women's coach ... Luis Alvarado was appointed as an assistant coach at New Jersey City. Alvarado is a May 2003 graduate of the school and was a member of the men's volleyball squad.

Staff

Facilities -- Saint Rose hired Benjamin Lombard as facilities and program director. During the 2003 fall semester, Lombard served as a graduate assistant in the ticket office at Marshall.

Sports information -- New Haven appointed Chuck Sadowski as director of athletics media relations. Sadowski, who succeeds Jason Sullivan, has been assistant athletics director for sports information and events at Austin since August 1996.

Sports information assistants -- Charleston Southern named Noelle Orr as an assistant sports information director ... Longwood announced Melissa Kristofak as interim assistant sports information director. Kristofak formerly interned with the school's sports information office during the 2001-02 year ... Mitch Wigness was named as assistant media relations director at North Dakota.

Strength and conditioning -- Keith Caton was elevated to head strength and conditioning coach at Elon. Caton has been with the school since May 2003 ... Kim Sword was appointed as strength and conditioning coach at Louisiana-Monroe.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Aaron Wellman accepted responsibilities as associate strength and conditioning coach at Ball State.

Associations

Lee McElroy was named as third vice-president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. McElroy, who takes over for Randall Spetman of Air Force, currently is director of athletics at Albany (New York) and is a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council.

Notables

Brian VanGorder, defensive coordinator at Georgia, was named as the winner of the Broyles Award as the top assistant football coach in the nation ... The following were named as National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas National Coaches of the Year: Division I men -- Jerry Yeagley, Indiana; Division I women -- Anson Dorrance, North Carolina; Division II men -- Mike O'Malley, Cal State Chico; Division II women -- Rob King, Kennesaw State; Division III men -- Lenny Armuth, Drew; Division III women -- Traci Ranieri, Oneonta State.

DEATHS

Alisa Lewis, a women's basketball student-athlete at California, died January 19. Lewis, a junior, competed in 10 games for the program this season.

Bob McGowan, a former assistant football coach at New Jersey City, died January 12. He was 35. McGowan was an offensive line coach at the school from 1996 to 1997.

Tony Herndon, a basketball official, died after collapsing from an apparent heart attack during a game. He was 43.

Former Stetson President Pope A. Duncan died December 18. Duncan, 83, also formerly served as president at South Georgia College and Georgia Southern College.

Harley Fite, former president at Carson-Newman, died December 31. Fite was 101.

Former St. Olaf President Sidney A. Rand died December 16. Rand was 87.

John T. Bernhard, formerly president at Western Michigan, died January 12 at the age of 83.

Nelson P. Guild died January 5. Guild, 75, formerly was president at Frostburg State.

Samuel M. Nabrit, former president at Texas Southern, died December 30. Nabrit was 98.
