Mobley appointed to track and field post


 

The College of New Jersey has hired Eric Mobley as head men's and women's track and field coach.

Mobley, who takes over for Steve Dolan, has been an assistant coach at Temple for the past three half years. He also worked as a secondary education teacher with the Community Education Partners in Philadelphia.

Before joining the Owls, Mobley, who holds a Level I certification from the USA Track and Field Coaches Education School, spent two seasons as an assistant at Akron and also completed an assistant coaching stint at LaSalle.

A 1993 graduate of LaSalle, Mobley earned all-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honors as a member of the track and field team during his senior year.

Chief executive officer

Bethany (West Virginia) named G.T. (Buck) Smith as president. Smith most recently has fulfilled the position on an interim basis.

Directors of athletics

Maryland Athletics Director Deborah A. Yow signed a two-year contract extension through August 2010. Yow has been in charge of the Terrapin athletics department for 11 years ... Terry Logue resigned as director of athletics at Westminster (Missouri). Logue, who has held the post since March 1998, will continue with the school teaching physical education and working part-time in athletics. The school announced head men's basketball coach Matt Mitchell as interim athletics director ... Chuck Bell, director of athletics at San Jose State since March 1998, announced plans to retire, effective December 1. Associate Athletics Director and Chief Operating Officer John Glass was named as Bell's interim successor ... Greg Steffen was selected as interim director of athletics at Eastern Mennonite. Steffen, who succeeds Larry Martin, will continue to serve as head women's soccer coach at the school, a post he has held for six seasons.

Associate directors of athletics

Utah State elevated Dale Mildenberger to associate athletics director and promoted Brian Evans to associate athletics director for student services. Mildenberger has been an assistant athletics director and head athletic trainer, and Evans was assistant athletics director for student services ... Greg Myford was hired as associate athletics director for marketing and communications at Penn State. Myford has been with Palace Sports & Entertainment for the past 12 years and most recently has served as senior vice-president of corporate development.

Coaches

Men's basketball ­ Billy Kennedy, head coach at Southeastern Louisiana, was awarded a contract extension through the 2007-08 season ... Saint Louis awarded head coach Brad Soderberg a five-year contract through the 2008-09 season. Soderberg enters his third season in charge of the Billikens program ... Tom Brennan announced plans to retire as head coach at Vermont, effective at the end of the season. Brennan is entering his 19th year as head coach at the school ... Robert Morris extended the contract of head coach Mark Schmidt through May 2009. Schmidt has been in charge of the program for three years.

Men's basketball assistants ­ Florida International named Heath Glick as director of basketball operations. Glick has been a member of the Miami (Florida) basketball staff for the past two years ... Eldon Price was hired as director of basketball operations at Penn State. Price most recently completed a 15-year tenure as head women's basketball coach at Rider ... Franklin & Marshall chose Chris Rogers as an assistant coach. Rogers has been an assistant coach at Lebanon Valley since 2002.

Women's basketball ­ Notre Dame awarded Muffet McGraw with a two-year contract extension through the 2010-11 season. McGraw has guided the Irish to 11 NCAA tournament appearances, the 2001 national championship and a 384-149 mark in 17 seasons ... Dayton announced Greg Williams as interim head coach. Williams, an assistant with the program, takes over for Jim Jabir, who is on a medical leave of absence.

Football ­ Mick Dennehy was released after five seasons as head coach at Utah State ... Washington's Keith Gilbertson stepped down as head coach, effective at the end of the season. Gilbertson has been head coach since 2003 ... Lawrence head coach Dave Brown resigned after six seasons.

Football assistant ­ Winston-Salem State will not renew the contract of defensive coordinator Gregory Richardson, who has been with the program for three seasons.

Men's and women's golf ­ Brian Mosher resigned as head women's golf coach and assistant baseball coach at Carthage. Mosher has been with the baseball program since 1989 and has led the Lady Reds to four conference championships since taking over as head women's golf coach in 1993 ... Texas-San Antonio hired Holly Tothe as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition during the 2005-06 season. Tothe was an assistant women's coach at Arizona in 2001-02 and most recently has worked as a golf instructor for Transview PTE Ltd. in Singapore ... Nancy Rubin-Sharff announced plans to retire as head women's coach at Stetson, effective December 9. Rubin-Sharff has guided the program for the past 10 seasons.

Women's soccer ­ Brian Sheehan resigned after five years as head coach at Rutgers-Camden ... Bill Steffen resigned as head coach at Oregon. Steffen has guided the program since it began in 1996.

Softball ­ Lonny Sargent was promoted to head coach at Utah State. Sargent has been an assistant with the program.

Softball assistant ­ Utah State named Todd Bradley as an assistant. Bradley formerly was head coach at Western Baptist College.

Men's and women's tennis ­ Chris Mahony, associate head men's coach at Tennessee since 2002, was named as acting head coach. Mahony takes over for Michael Fancutt, who resigned after serving as head coach since 1997.

Men's and women's track and field assistant ­ LaShawna Mapp was hired as an assistant at Illinois State.

Men's and women's volleyball ­ Nicole Wentz stepped down after two seasons as head women's coach at Keystone ... Eastern Mennonite named Fred Miller as head men's coach. Miller has been head girls' volleyball coach for 26 seasons and superintendent for 21 years at Central Christian (Ohio) High School.

Wrestling ­ Maranatha Baptist chose Scott Hawes as head coach. Hawes has been coaching wrestling and soccer at Rochelle Township (Illinois) High School and wrestling at Rochelle (Illinois) Middle School.

Staff

Academic services ­ Angela Crock was chosen as coordinator for academic affairs athletics at Virginia. Crock succeeds Sean Simmons.

Development ­ Alex Ogeka was hired as director of development for athletics at Mansfield. For the past two years, Ogeka has worked as director of athletics marketing and ticket operations at Hartford.

Sports information ­ Stephanie Tunnera was tabbed as sports information director at Nichols.

National office

Monique Holland was named as an assistant director of membership services at the national office. Holland has been an assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator at Clayton State ... Mandi Kern and Matt Banker were promoted to assistant directors of membership services. Kern and Banker have been coordinators of membership services.

Notables

Archie Manning, former all-American quarterback at Mississippi, was named as the recipient of the Davey O'Brien Legends Award. Manning will receive the honor, which recognizes a quarterback who has made a significant contribution to football, distinguished himself as an extraordinary leader and demonstrated exemplary conduct and reputation on and off the field, during the 28th annual awards dinner February 21, 2005, in Fort Worth, Texas. The only Rebel football student-athlete to have his number retired, Manning went onto play professional football in the NFL from 1971 to 1985.

DEATHS

Former St. Peter's head men's basketball coach Don Kennedy died October 26. He was 97. Kennedy joined the school in 1950 and guided the program to a 323-195 mark in 22 years.

Alan Ebersole, a swimming student-athlete at Princeton, drowned last month. Ebersole, 20, was a sophomore at the school.

Indiana State President Emeritus Richard G. Landini died October 24. Landini served as president from 1975 to 1992.

Former Randolph-Macon men's basketball coach Hal Nunnally died November 10. He was 65. Nunnally took over the program in 1975 and guided the Yellow Jackets to a 431-232 record, 10 NCAA tournament berths and an appearance in the 1977 NCAA Division II national-championship game. Nunnally retired in 1999.

Warren Williamson, former student-athlete and head wrestling coach at South Dakota State, died in November. He was 77. Williamson, a three-time football letter-winner for the Jackrabbits, served as head wrestling coach at South Dakota State from 1957 to 1973. A member of the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee from 1969 to 1973, Williamson's teams earned four North Central Conference championships and compiled a 134-74-9 record during his tenure. He retired in 1987.
