Wartburg and Augsburg each claimed four individual titles -- tying a Division III Wrestling Championships record -- but Wartburg scraped together 16 more points than the Auggies to successfully defend its team title at the championships March 5-6 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Seven Knights advanced to weight-class finals, and victories by Dustin Hinschberger at 141 pounds, Bart Mehlert at 149, Ryan Sturm at 184 and Akeem Carter at 197 sealed Wartburg's team victory.

Augsburg kept things interesting to the end, however, as four of its five weight-class finalists grabbed titles -- including Marcus LeVesseur, who won his second straight championship at 157 pounds. LeVesseur, a sophomore who has won 84 collegiate matches without a loss, was this year's only repeat individual titlist.

But Wartburg, which set a championships record with its seven finalists, was able to stay a step ahead of Augsburg through most of the weekend. The Knights actually trailed Augsburg by 1 ¹/2 points after the meet's opening session, but advanced nine of its 10 wrestlers to the next round of the winners' bracket, while Augsburg advanced seven of its nine qualifiers.

Wartburg was able to capitalize on that advantage in numbers through the remaining competition, advancing eight wrestlers into weight-class semifinals. The Knights then broke a record they shared with Wilkes when they advanced seven of those eight wrestlers into the finals.

Wartburg and Augsburg both finished well ahead of the pack, with the Knights outpointing the Auggies, 156 ¹/2 -140 ¹/2 . Luther finished third with 68 ¹/2 points, followed by Delaware Valley and Simpson.

The title is Wartburg's fourth, all since 1996.

Wartburg and Augsburg join John Carroll and Montclair State as the only schools to have claimed four individual titles in a championships meet. Augsburg actually already was on the list of four-title winners, having also accomplished the feat in 2000.

Although Augsburg came up short in team competition, it now has claimed more individual wrestling titles than any school in Division III. The Auggies have won 31 individual championships, three more than Montclair State.

In addition to LeVesseur, Augsburg recorded victories by Matt Shankey at 125 pounds, Mark Matzek at 133 and Joe Moon at 174.

Moon upset defending champ Cody Koenig of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the semifinals of his weight class, then claimed the crown with a victory over top-seeded Eduard Aliaksynka of Montclair State. He was honored as the meet's most outstanding wrestler for the performance.

Also winning individual titles at the meet were Artie Weidler of Brockport State at 165 pounds and Ryan Allen of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the heavyweight class.
