Tommies keep softball slate unblemished with first title

Thomas (Minnesota) needed just two runs to slide by Moravian and capture its first Division III Softball Championship.

The Tommies blanked the Greyhounds, who were making their first championship-series appearance, 2-0, in a weather-delayed final May 17 in Salem, Virginia.

The victory stretched St. Thomas' winning streak to 41. The Tommies went 7-0 in the tournament, never trailed and allowed just 10 runs during their regional and national-championship run. The win streak is the longest in Division III and is the second-longest for all divisions.

The contest was scoreless through four innings. St. Thomas' Kathleen Fitzpatrick broke through with a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth and stole second. She scored on a Nikki Conway single. Michelle Wong plated Conway later in the inning on a single down the right-field line to complete the scoring for the game.

"It was just a great team effort, tonight and all season," said St. Thomas head coach John Tschida. "A lot of players stepped up, just like they have all year. We have six seniors who didn't all get to make the on-field contributions, but they made a huge impact with their work ethic and attitudes."

Tschida also guided St. Mary's (Minnesota) to the national championship in 2000.

Moravian hitters managed only one hit -- a double by Krissy Cianfichi -- off St. Thomas sophomore pitcher Janet Nagle, who turned in a complete game, tallied four strikeouts and allowed just one walk.

The Greyhounds' Meagan Hennessy gave up two runs, five hits and no walks in the losing effort. Her three strikeouts brought the sophomore pitcher's season total to 168, a school record. Moravian, which completed the 2004 campaign with a 40-6 record, also established a school record for victories in a season.

St. Thomas finished the year 46-4.

Joining St. Thomas' Conway, Nagle, Carrie Embree and Kaja Martinson on the all-tournament team were Hennessy, Lauren Homa and Melissa Soroka of Moravian; Salisbury's Leslie White, Lacey Lister and Erin Ruest; Muskingum's Erin Zupko and Kim Tackett; Alma's Colleen Trybus; Chapman's Brittany Ziegler; and Amanda Dow-Allen of Wheaton (Massachusetts).
