Luther College leader appointed to vacancy

Luther College President Richard Torgerson has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Division III Presidents Council.

Torgerson, who recently served on a panel that provided input into the new Association-wide and Division III strategic plans, has been president at Luther since 1999.

He previously served for 30 years in teaching and administrative positions at five colleges, beginning with faculty appointments in biology at Wartburg College and Texas Lutheran College.

Torgerson served during his final two years at Texas Lutheran as assistant dean for academic affairs, then served as vice-president for academic affairs and academic dean at Baker University; vice-president and academic dean, and also for one year as acting president, at Bethany College (Kansas); vice-president for development at Wartburg; and vice-president for development at Gustavus Adolphus College.

The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native earned a bachelor's degree in biology and physical education at Concordia College, Moorhead, and a master's degree in entomology and a doctorate in entomology and zoology at Washington State University.

Torgerson's appointment expires in January 2005, but he is eligible for re-selection.
