The NCAA News

Sports sponsorship: Southern Connecticut State University announced it will drop its men's gymnastics program.

Milestones: Lincoln Memorial University softball coach Dan Burns won his 300th game as coach of the Lady Railsplitters when his team took the first game of a doubleheader against Cumberland University April 14. Since 1995, Burns has produced seven Gulf South Conference teams, 18 all-Gulf South performers and the university's first Division II all-American. Burns was inducted into the Lincoln Memorial Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 ... Lynn University women's tennis coach Mike Perez claimed his 500th career match April 16 with an 8-1 victory over the University of North Florida. After the victory, Perez's record as head of the men's and women's program stood at 500-151, a .768 percentage. "This is about the great players who have passed through our men's and women's programs," Perez said. "It's about the assistant coaches and the support staff. It's about the administration and everyone in the community who has loyally supported me and our program. I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by such great people in my 15 seasons at Lynn."

Miscellaneous: The University of South Carolina at Aiken had to make a double play to honor standout student-athlete Jami Cornwell. At the conclusion of the recent athletics department awards banquet, Athletics Director Randy Warrick retired Cornwell's basketball and softball jerseys, revealing two framed jerseys with the number "20" to the 200 student-athletes in attendance. As a basketball point guard, Cornwell led the Lady Pacer program to the school's first women's basketball regular-season championship since 1990-91. She holds 12 school records and is South Carolina-Aiken's career leader in points, assists, steals and minutes played. On the softball field, she was a three-time all-conference performer and freshman of the year in 2000. She led the team in batting each of her four seasons and ranks among the top five in school history in 12 statistical categories.
