Championships committee makes format adjustments

The Division II Championships Committee approved format changes for two championships, beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.

At its January 27-29 meeting, the committee approved a recommendation from the Division II Field Hockey Committee to expand the championship from four to six teams, with the No. 1 seeds in each of the two regions getting first-round byes.

Also, the format for the Division II Men's Golf Championships will be modified so that the field is composed of 20 teams and five individuals. Previously, the championships have contained 18 teams and 12 individuals.

The Championships Committee also will recommend legislation to the Management Council to change the minimum criteria for eligibility to the Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. The proposal would require that, effective with the 2005 championships, institutions must have participated in four indoor meets with at least 10 individuals on the team to be eligible for the championships.

In other business, the committee:

Noted that the Division II Management Council has asked for an assessment of whether the football heat-acclimatization model that was adopted at the 2003 Convention should be applied to other fall sports.

Recommended that the Championships Committee be expanded to include a representative from the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Recommended that the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and the Divisions II and III Championships Committees conduct one joint meeting annually, in September.
