Basketball committees select future championship sites

The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Committees used their summer meetings to select preliminary-round sites for future championships.

Both committees met June 29-July 3 in Avon, Colorado.

The women's committee selected first- and second-round sites for the 2005 and 2006 championships, while the men's committee chose sites for 2007 and 2008.

The Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet's administrative committee approved the sites.

Women's sites

The first- and second-rounds for the 2005 and 2006 Division I Women's Basketball Championships will be conducted at eight predetermined sites each year, which represents a format change from the previous format of 16 first- and second-round sites.

The following sites will host games Saturday, March 19, and Monday, March 21, 2005:

  • Reunion Arena, Dallas (University of Texas at Austin and Texas Tech University, hosts)

  • Save Mart Center, Fresno, California (California State University, Fresno, host)

    * Williams Arena, Minneapolis (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, host)

  • Bank of America Arena, Seattle (University of Washington, host)

    The following sites will host games Sunday, March 20, and Tuesday, March 22, 2005:

  • Dean E. Smith Center, Chapel Hill, North Carolina (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, host)

  • Comcast Center, College Park, Maryland (University of Maryland, College Park, host)

  • Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville, Tennessee (University of Tennessee, Knoxville, host)

  • Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, Storrs, Connecticut (University of Connecticut, host)

    The following sites will host games either Saturday, March 18, and Monday, March 20, or Sunday, March 19, and Tuesday, March 21, 2006:

  • Allstate Arena, Chicago (DePaul University, host)

     

  • Pepsi Center, Denver (University of Colorado, Boulder, host)

  • Memorial Gymnasium, Nashville, Tennessee (Vanderbilt University, host)

  • Ted Constant Convocation Center, Norfolk, Virginia (Old Dominion University, host)

  • Sovereign Bank Arena, Trenton, New Jersey (Rider University and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, hosts)

  • McKale Center, Tucson, Arizona (University of Arizona, host)

  • Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania State University, host)

  • Mackey Arena, West Lafayette, Indiana (Purdue University, host)

    Specific dates for the 2006 first- and second-round sites will be announced at a later date.

    Sites of future Women's Final Fours, previously selected by the committee, are: 2005 -- RCA Dome, Indianapolis; 2006 -- FleetCenter, Boston; 2007 -- Gund Arena, Cleveland.

    Men's sites

    The men's basketball committee selected sites for the opening round, first and second rounds and regionals of the 2007 and 2008 Division I Men's Basketball Championships.

    The University of Dayton will host the 2007 and 2008 opening-round games at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, March 13, 2007, and March 18, 2008.

    The 2007 first- and second-round sites are:

  • Buffalo, New York; HSBC Arena; Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Canisius College and Niagara University, hosts; Thursday and Saturday, March 15 and 17.

     

  • Chicago; United Center; Big Ten Conference, host; Friday and Sunday, March 16 and 18.

  • Columbus, Ohio; Nationwide Arena; Ohio State University, host; March 16 and 18.

     

  • Lexington, Kentucky; Rupp Arena; University of Kentucky, host; March 16 and 18.

  • New Orleans; New Orleans Arena; Tulane University, host; March 16 and 18.

  • Sacramento, California; ARCO Arena; University of the Pacific, host; March 15 and 17.

  • Spokane, Washington; Spokane Memorial Arena; Washington State University, host; March 15 and 17.

    * Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum; Wake Forest University, host; March 15 and 17.

    The 2007 regional sites are:

  • East Rutherford, New Jersey; Continental Airlines Arena; Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, host; Friday and Sunday, March 23 and 25.

  • San Antonio; Alamodome; University of Texas at San Antonio, host; Thursday and Saturday, March 22 and 24.

  • San Jose, California; HP Pavilion; San Jose State University, host; March 22 and 24.

  • St. Louis; Edward Jones Dome; Missouri Valley Conference, host; March 23 and 25.

    The 2008 first- and second-round sites are:

  • Anaheim, California; Arrowhead Pond; Big West Conference, host; Thursday and Saturday, March 20 and 22.

  • Birmingham, Alabama; BJCC Arena; Southeastern Conference, host; Friday and Sunday, March 21 and 23.

  • Denver; Pepsi Center; Colorado State University and Mountain West Conference, hosts; March 20 and 22.

  • Little Rock, Arkansas; Alltel Arena; University of Arkansas, Little Rock, host; March 21 and 23.

  • Omaha, Nebraska; Qwest Center; Creighton University and Missouri Valley Conference, hosts; March 20 and 22.

  • Raleigh, North Carolina; RBC Center; North Carolina State University, host; March 21 and 23.

  • Tampa, Florida; St. Pete Times Forum; University of South Florida, host; March 21 and 23.

  • Washington, D.C.; MCI Center; Georgetown University, host; March 20 and 22.

    The 2008 regional sites are:

  • Charlotte, North Carolina; Charlotte Arena; University of North Carolina, Charlotte, host; Thursday and Saturday, March 27 and 29.

  • Detroit; Ford Field; University of Detroit Mercy, host; Friday and Sunday, March 28 and 30.

  • Houston; Reliant Stadium; University of Houston, host; March 28 and 30.

  • Phoenix; America West Arena; Arizona State University, host; March 27 and 29.

    Sites of future Men's Final Fours, previously selected by the committee, are: 2005 -- Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis; 2006 -- RCA Dome, Indianapolis; 2007 -- Georgia Dome, Atlanta; 2008 -- Alamodome, San Antonio; 2009 -- Ford Field, Detroit; 2010 -- RCA Dome, Indianapolis; 2011 -- Reliant Stadium, Houston.
